Women's Soccer Shuts Out Linfield In 0-0 Draw

The Pioneers posted their second shutout in four NWC contests

PORTLAND, Ore.—Junior Delaney Jones stopped a career-high nine shots to help Lewis & Clark post their second shutout in Northwest Conference play with a 0-0 tie against Linfield University on Wednesday night at Griswold Stadium.Ā

THE BASICS
Ā
Lewis & Clark 0, Linfield 0
(Lewis & Clark 3-3-2, NWC 1-2-1)Ā
(Linfield 5-3-3, NWC 3-3-1)Ā

HOW IT HAPPENED
Ā
Lewis & Clark jumped out to a strong start in the opening 10 minutes but then had to withstand a barrage of Linfield shots the rest of the way. In the end the teams settled for a point apiece, as Jones and the Pioneers defense came up big for their second shutout in four NWC contests.
Ā
Jones posted a new career-high in saves for a fourth-consecutive contest. The junior made four saves in the opening stanza and five more in the second half. Her biggest save came 10 minutes into the second half, when Sidra Griffen sent a shot from the far side curving towards the back post and Jones made a jumping parry to knock the shot away and keep the score 0-0.Ā
Ā
The Pioneers back four of Ava Lazzara, Abby Hayes, Kate Meinhard and Elle Sparks, along with substitute Sophie Rossier did a great job limiting the Wildcats to shots from outside the box and from difficult scoring angles. Meinhard and sophomore Grace Smith combined to step in front of a shot in the final 10 minutes from 15-yards out.Ā
Ā
Offensively, Lewis & Clark generated the majority of their chances in the opening 10 minutes. The Pioneers posted two of their four shots and all three of their corner kicks inside the first 8:14.
Ā
Senior Celeste Schreifels pounced on a bouncing ball in the box inside the first 90 seconds but her shot was blocked at the point of contact.Ā
Ā
After three-straight corner kicks, Lewis & Clark generated their best chance of the game in the ninth minute. Schreifels was fouled right on the 20-yard line on the football field and Hayes stepped behind the ball. The senior center back sent a hard right-footed shot towards goal from just over 30-yards out that beat the keeper but the shot pinged off the crossbar and bounced around before being played out of danger.Ā
Ā
Linfield would make adjustments to control the ball more in the midfield and turn the tide as the visitors would record nine of the final 10 shots in the half and 19 of the final 21 shots overall.Ā
Ā
