Loggers Defeat Men's Soccer In Tight NWC Contest

Men's Soccer allowed a season-low 13 shots in the loss

PORTLAND, Ore.—Lewis & Clark matched their best defensive performance of the season in a tightly contested, chippy conference affair on Sunday against visiting University of Puget Sound.Ā
Ā
THE BASICS
Ā
Puget Sound 2, Lewis & Clark 0
(Lewis & Clark 0-7, Northwest Conference 0-3)
(Puget Sound 3-2-2, Northwest Conference 2-0-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Ā
Puget Sound struck for two goals in a six-minute span early in the first half but that would be all the Pioneers defense would allow - as they put together a strong showing across the board. Lewis & Clark's back line of Sam Gunderson, Simon McGlothern, Talen Haywood and Owen Carroll and sophomore keeper Micaiah Garan teamed up to limit the visitors to just 13 shots and five shots on target.Ā
Ā
Garan ended the game with three saves on five shots and came off his line on numerous occasions to break up promising opportunities at the edge of Lewis & Clark's 18-yard box.Ā
Ā
Sophomore Dylan Weinstein was involved in both of Lewis & Clark's best offensive opportunities.Ā
Ā
In the first half, Lewis & Clark worked a perfect short-corner routine. The ball was laid off to Weinstein in space and he sent a hard, low service into the box that skipped through multiple players and bounced just over Ben Schwartz's foot at the back post.Ā
Ā
Late in the second half, the Pioneers earned a free kick from distance. Weinstein sent a floating ball towards the back post that challenged the Loggers keeper but ultimately went off the crossbar and bounced away from danger.Ā
Ā
A day after allowing two goals in the first 10 minutes and four goals in the opening half, Lewis & Clark put together a strong, concerted defensive effort as they limited Puget Sound to just three total shots in the first 45 minutes.Ā
Ā
The Loggers took the lead in the 17thĀ minute on a Pema Globus free kick. Lewis & Clark was whistled for a foul just outside the box and Globus sent a line drive shot just over the wall and inside the near post.Ā
Ā
The visitors added a second goal just under six minutes later. Connor Barnes slipped a pass through two defenders into the goal box to find Globus. Globus sent a low shot past Garan that was tipped home by Shane Ivich just before it was going to go over the goal line.Ā
Ā
BY THE NUMBERS
  • The Pioneers have allowed two goals in two of their first three conference contests. Last year, in their first year as part of the Northwest Conference, Lewis & Clark allowed two goals or fewer in just two of their 16 conference games.Ā
  • The two teams combined for 30 fouls and eight yellow cards. All eight yellow cards came in the final 43 minutes.Ā
  • Weinstein led Lewis & Clark with four of the team's five shots and their lone shot on goal. Ben Schwartz added the other shot.Ā
  • Puget Sound finished with a 13-5 shot advantage.
  • Lewis & Clark allowed a season-low 13 shots and gave up their second-fewest shots on goal (five) of the year.Ā Ā
