PORTLAND, Ore. – Despite a valiant late-game effort, Lewis & Clark College men's soccer fell short against Linfield University, losing 2-1 in a hard-fought Northwest Conference matchup on Wednesday evening at Griswold Stadium.
THE BASICS
Linfield 2, Lewis & Clark 1
(Lewis & Clark 0-8, 0-4 NWC)
(Linfield 2-9, 1-6 NWC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Aashir Walson scored his first collegiate goal and led the Pioneers' offense with four shots, three on target, both career-highs for the junior.
Sophomore
Micaiah Garan made four saves, including crucial stops in the second half, to keep the Pioneers within striking distance. The goalkeeper's performance helped keep Lewis & Clark in the game despite the loss.
Linfield struck early when E.J. Sablan converted a penalty kick in the third minute following a handball in the box by Lewis & Clark. This early setback proved to be the difference in the game.
The Wildcats dominated the first half, outshooting the Pioneers 11-0 and forcing Garan and the defense to make crucial plays. Late in the first half, sophomore
Simon McGlothern jumped up in the box as a cross sailed towards the net and headed the ball out of bounds for a Linfield corner. Had the back not intercepted the ball, the Wildcats would have had a great opportunity to score. On the ensuing corner, first-year
Sam Gunderson helped prevent Linfield's Keegan Brooks' shot from reaching the goal line and pushed the ball wide right.
The Pioneers refused to give up even after Linfield extended its lead in the 62nd minute when Cade Alaniz, assisted by Sablan, found the back of the net.
Lewis & Clark's persistence paid off in the 85th minute when Walson scored his first career goal, assisted by first-year
Sam London, who recorded his first collegiate assist.
The Pioneers showed marked improvement in the second half, recording all six of their shots after the break. Juniors
Daniel Estoll and
Ben Schwartz joined Walson with one shot each.
