HOW IT HAPPENED
A day after conceding three early goals and finding themselves down 4-0 at halftime, the Pioneers defense put up a much stronger showing in their second and final game in Hawaii. Lewis & Clark held their Division II hosts to just three off-target shots in the first half and 11 total shots (three on goal) across the ninety minutes.
Sophomore
Micaiah Garan made his first appearance and first start of the season. The Honolulu native played the opening 45 minutes and did not face a shot on target. Junior
Ben Tallent played the second half in the first appearance of his junior campaign.
Lewis & Clark went with a different looking lineup on Sunday that helped the team off to a much better start. Juniors
Aashir Walson and
Akshay Bhatia made their first starts of the season and first year
Brandon Paynter earned his first collegiate start.
The Pioneers stepped in front of the Sharks first two shots of the game and then forced a shot to go wide and high of the mark in the 19
th minute. The two teams would play the final 25+ minute of the half and the first 10+ of the second half without a shot, as Lewis & Clark flexed their defensive muscle.
Hawaii Pacific opened the scoring over 20 minutes into the second half, when Shota Fukunishi sent a high shot into the upper-left netting on the first shot on target of the game at 66:41. Jude Boyd and Tyson Norr (76:56) added tallies for the hosts who were playing their first contest of the fall.
