Freshman Caden Hodina earned his second win of the season by allowing one hit and one walk in 2.1 scoreless innings. Hodina struck out one in his second collegiate appearance out of the pen.Ā
Ā
Lewis & Clark started and finished strong in Saturday's game one.Ā
Ā
In the bottom of the first, Gonzaga led off with a single up the middle and raced to third on a Davis bloop double down the left-field line. Bass followed by crushing the first pitch he saw well over the right-field fence to make it 3-0.Ā
Ā
Pierson was cruising through the first three innings but ran into trouble in the fourth and fifth. Brody Phinney made it 3-2 with a two-run homer in the top of the fourth and Ashton Barton added a go-ahead homer in the fifth to make it 4-3 in favor of the visitors.Ā
Ā
The Pioneers evened the score in the bottom of the fifth. Davis led off with his second double of the game and Bass singled off the wall in right to put runners at the corners. Heron followed with an RBI groundout to tie the score at 4-4.Ā
Ā
With Pierson and then Hodina matching Lutes reliever Chris Moreno pitch for pitch, the next run in the contest felt crucial. Lewis & Clark came through with the big hit in the bottom of the seventh. Davis started the inning with a single and Bass walked to put two runners on. Ghammachi loaded the bases with a single with one out. With two down and the bases still full, Cavagnaro lifted a single to left-center field that scored Davis and Bass to make it 6-4.Ā
Ā
The Pioneers blew the game open in the eighth. Gonzaga started the rally with a one-out single. Gavin Mangano followed with a walk and Davis singled through the left side to score Gonzaga. Bass added an RBI double and Heron ripped a two-run single through the left-side to make it 10-4.Ā
Ā
Pacific Lutheran put the leadoff runner on in the ninth, but Lewis & Clark turned their second double play of the game and Hodina sealed the win with a strikeout.Ā
Ā
GAME TWO RECAP
Ā
Pacific Lutheran reliever Matthew Sherwood shut down the Pioneers for the final seven innings, to help the Lutes earn a 9-6 game two victory.
Ā
Heron paced the offense with three hits, one run scored, a double and a walk. Joaquin Sandoval added two hits, two RBI and a double. Ghammachi recorded a two-run homer and Michael Aikawa finished with two hits, three runs scored, a walk and two hit by pitches. Gonzaga posted his second two-hit game of the day and tacked on an RBI and a walk.Ā

Ā
After giving up an unearned run in the first inning, Lewis & Clark grabbed a 2-1 lead in the second. Aikawa opened the frame with a hit by pitch and Bret Potter and Gonzaga followed with walks to load the bases with one out. Sandoval made it 2-1 when he ripped a double just inside the left-field line to score Aikawa and Potter.Ā
Ā
Pacific Lutheran responded with four runs in the top of the third. Hayden Kaiser delivered the big blow with a two-run double to right-center.
Ā
Lewis & Clark answered with three runs of their own to tie the game at 5-5. Heron opened the frame with a double to right-center and Ghammachi blasted a home run over the left-center field to cut the deficit to 5-4. After a pitching change, Aikawa greeted Sherwood with a double to right field. Gonzaga made it 5-5 when he singled to left center with two down to plate Aikawa.Ā
Ā
The visitors took the lead for good in the top of the fourth. Pacific Lutheran loaded the bases with one out on a single and back-to-back hit by pitches. Aaron Barber made it 6-5 Lutes with an RBI single and Barton followed with an RBI groundout.Ā
Ā
After recording seven hits in the first three innings, Lewis & Clark managed just four hits the rest of the way. Lewis & Clark had several chances to tie the game or take the lead.Ā
Ā
In the seventh inning, Heron led off with a single but was erased on a double play. Aikawa followed with a double and Potter was hit by a pitch to put two on with two outs. Jack Savant singled to right-center to make it 7-6 but Sherwood induced a fly out to right to end the inning.Ā
