Senior Jack Savant extended his hitting streak to five games

WALLA WALLA, Wash.—Whitman starting pitchers Julien Hernandez and Jack Hostetler combined to allow three runs over 15 innings and struck out 20 to help the Blues earn a doubleheader sweep of Lewis & Clark College baseball on Saturday afternoon.

(Lewis & Clark 17-18-1, Northwest Conference 8-12)

GAME ONE RECAP

Whitman used a pair of run scoring triples and a three-run homer in the seventh to jump out to a 7-2 lead and the Blues held off a late Lewis & Clark charge to secure the game one win.

Junior Will Heron led the Pioneers offense with three hits, a run scored and an RBI. Junior Justin Cavagnaro tacked on two hits, a run scored and an RBI. Senior Jack Savant chipped in two hits and a run scored and Ghammachi drilled a three-run homer.

Senior Brett Pierson went 4.1 innings and allowed five hits, five walks and four runs scored. The senior added one strikeout. Sophomore Nate Kerr went the final 3.2 innings. He struck out three and allowed three hits and three runs.

Both teams put four runners on through the first three innings but neither team could scratch across a run. The Pioneers turned an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play in the first and used a line drive to second in the second to turn another double play.

Lewis & Clark took their lone lead of the day in the fourth. Heron led off the frame with a double. With two down, Cavagnaro singled to left field to score Heron from second.

Whitman responded with three runs of their own in the fourth. With one down and two runners on, Sam Mieszkowski-Lapping tied the game with an RBI single to center-field. Nate Korahais made it 3-1 with a two-run triple to right field. Pierson got out of a bases-loaded jam later in the frame with a pop-up to short.

The Pioneers got back within one in the fifth. Brennen Davis opened the inning with a single and moved to second on a groundout. With two outs, Heron recorded his second of three hits against Hernandez to make it 3-2. Lewis & Clark loaded the bases with a Bret Potter walk and an error, but Hernandez induced a pop up to second.

Whitman answered in the bottom of the inning. With one out and a runner on second, Halen Otte tripled to extend the advantage back to 4-2. With two on and out, Lewis & Clark posted their third double play of the game when Heron snagged a line drive and ran back to the bag for the third out.

Lewis & Clark got to the Blues bullpen in the eighth. Cavagnaro opened the frame with a single and moved to third on a one-out Savant single. After Whitman reliever Russell Petersen recorded the second out, Ghammachi hit his fourth home run in the past three games to make it 7-5. Luke Bass walked to bring the game-tying run to the plate but Petersen retired the final four batters he faced to close out the win.
