PORTLAND, Ore. – Lewis & Clark College baseball honored their nine graduating seniors in a brief ceremony before Sunday's final home game at Jerry Gatto Field against Whitworth University.
THE BASICS
Whitworth 8, Lewis & Clark 2
(Lewis & Clark 17-16-1, 8-10 NWC)
(Whitworth 21-11, 9-9 NWC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Senior
Jakob Ghammachi hit his third home run of the weekend and his second double to notch six extra-base hits against the Pirates over three games.
Junior
Luke Ritter pitched four and third innings of relief, giving up two runs on four hits while striking out a season-high six batters as he works his way back into the lineup from injury.
Whitworth struck first in the second inning with a two-RBI double in the second inning off freshman
Caden Hodina. The Pirates added two more unearned runs on a fielding error in the top of the third inning. Hodina's day ended in the top of the fourth after a final RBI double put Whitworth up 5-0. The righty was starting his first game since the end of March, threw three and two-thirds innings, gave up six hits, five runs, only three earned, and struck out two batters.
Ghammachi got a run back for Lewis and Clark in the bottom of the fourth inning with his third solo home run in the last two games. All three of his home runs were over the center field fence this weekend.
Freshman Micheal Aikawa pulled the Pioneers within 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth when he drove in junior
Will Heron from third.
Whitworth added two more runs in the eighth and another in the ninth to avoid a weekend sweep by Lewis & Clark.
