Late Goal Lifts Augsburg Past Women's Lacrosse In Back-and-Forth Tilt

Freshman Sage Swegle scored five goals and added three assists

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.—Augsburg University's Jade Wilson scored with 1:54 remaining to lift the Auggies to an 11-10 win over Lewis & Clark College women's lacrosse in a back-and-forth tilt inside the Augsburg Dome.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Lewis & Clark battled back from deficits of 2-0, 5-2 and 7-4 to take a 9-8 lead in the fourth quarter in an incredibly close game.

Freshman Sage Swegle put together an extremely solid game. The Colorado native was involved in eight-straight goals at one point and finished with single-game program records in goals (five) and assists (three). Swegle's three assists were the first three in program history. She also added three ground balls, one caused turnover and one draw control.

Freshman Lauren Elliott posted multiple goals for the second-straight contest. Elliott scored twice, won seven draw controls and added four ground balls.

Sophomore Kate Meinhard and freshmen Finley Allen and Evelyn Burnett also scored for the Pioneers. Meinhard and Allen tied for the game-high with six caused turnovers apiece. Meinhard chipped in four draw controls and three ground balls. Allen notched a new program record seven ground balls. Burnett scored her first collegiate goal on two shots on target.

In the cage, freshmen Zoey Hamel-Hyland and Aster Daellenbach combined to make nine saves. Hamel-Hyland started and posted four saves on nine shots. Daellenbach came on at halftime and made five saves on six shots in their first collegiate appearance.

Wilson scored six goals and added one assist to lead Augsburg to their first win of the season.

Saturday morning's game was played at a slower pace after both teams played down a player on Friday and were also down a player to start Saturday's contest. The Pioneers had the tougher turnaround of the two teams, after finishing up their game on Friday just after midnight and returning for an 11 a.m. start.

Augsburg looked the more energized team to start the contest and jumped out to a 2-0 lead with 4:03 to go in the quarter.

Lewis & Clark jumpstarted their offense thanks to a pair of draw control wins from Elliott. The freshman won a draw and went directly to the net herself to make it 2-1 with 3:45 left in the quarter. Swegle tied the game 14 seconds later. Off another Elliott win, Swegle received a pass from Elliott near midfield and drove to the cage for a 2-2 tie.

Despite Lewis & Clark controlling play and the chances to start the second quarter, it would be Augsburg who would strike first. The Auggies scored three goals in a 1:55 span to take a 5-2 lead with 2:53 left in the half.

Lewis & Clark responded with two goals of their own in the final 58 seconds. Swegle made it 5-3 with a goal with 58 seconds left in the half. After an Augsburg draw control win, Meinhard forced a turnover and Elliott collected the ground ball with under 15 seconds to play. Swegle pushed the ball up and field and found Burnett with under five seconds left in the half. Burnett fired a shot past Augsburg goalie Nicole Schuster with one tick remaining on the clock.

Augsburg again started a quarter off on the right foot as they made it 7-4 with 4:44 to go in the third stanza. Lewis & Clark retaliated with three-straight goals in a 3:46 span to tie the game for the first time.

Meinhard posted her first goal of the contest off a Swegle feed at 4:02. Swegle added a pair of free-position goals (2:34 and 24 seconds left) to knot the game at 7-7. The hosts retook the lead just before the fourth, when Wilson won the ensuing draw control and raced down the field to score with 16 seconds left.

The Pioneers grabbed their first lead of the game thanks to two goals in the opening four minutes of the fourth. Swegle knotted the game at 8-8 with 13:39 to play. Elliott scored a free-position goal with 11:07 to play to give the Pioneers their first fourth-quarter lead in program history.

Augsburg posted back-to-back strikes to retake the lead with 7:16 to play (10-9). The second goal was especially painful for the Pioneers. Meinhard was sent to the penalty area for a second yellow card right before the 10th goal and the team was forced to play down a player for the final 7:34.

Despite playing down a second player, Lewis & Clark managed to tie the game with 3:13 left. Daellenbach made three crucial saves to keep the deficit at 10-9. After the third stop, Swegle carried the ball up field and found Allen in transition. Allen sent a high shot into the netting to tie the game at 10-10.

Lewis & Clark had a chance to retake the lead, but a shot went just wide of the cage with 150 seconds left.

Wilson scored the final goal of the game with 1:54 left. The sophomore picked up a bouncing ball in the offensive end and used her speed to get to the cage for the game-winning tally.

Augsburg would win the final draw control and Lewis & Clark never managed to get the ball back across midfield before the clock hit zero.
