Lacrosse Falls to Willamette In PNW Opener

Sophomore Kate Meinhard posted her first career multi-goal game

SALEM, Ore.—Lewis & Clark College women's lacrosse sophomore Kate Meinhard scored a pair of goals to lead the Pioneers on Tuesday night in their first regular-season meeting against a future Northwest Conference opponent.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Meinhard posted her first career multi-goal game and added a team-high three ground balls and three draw controls. She also tacked on a caused turnover. 
 
Freshmen Finley Allen and Sage Swegle each dished out one assist in the Pioneers first regular-season game in the Pacific Northwest. Allen added a team-high two caused turnovers and tied with Swegle and freshman Lauren Elliott with two ground balls. Allen and Elliott each tacked on two draw controls. 
 
In net, Zoey Hamel-Hyland and Aster Daellenbach split the two halves. Hamel-Hyland made three saves on 15 shots on target in the first 30 minutes. Daellenbach faced eight shots in the second stanza. 
 
Willamette's Claire Kisielnicki led four Bearcats who finished with hat tricks. Kisielnick posted five goals and one assist in the victory. Shea Richardson-Pepp (four goals), Brooklyn Pearl and Lily Bachiochi also posted three goals or more. 
 
The hosts jumped out to an 8-0 lead after the opening 15 minutes, including scoring six goals in the first 8:32. 
 
Willamette extended their advantage to 12-0 at halftime and 18-0 by the end of the third quarter. Lewis & Clark was forced to play the entire second half down a player after a Pioneer was injured late in the first half. 
 
Meinhard scored the Pioneers opening goal with 6:13 remaining in the fourth quarter. The sophomore took a pass from Swegle and finished with a high shot for the first man-up goal in program history. 
 
Lewis & Clark added a second goal with 62 seconds to play. This time it was Allen executing a strong push towards the circle and then finding Meinhard for her second goal of the contest. 
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Freshman Rowan Levandoski made her collegiate lacrosse debut in the contest. 
  • The Pioneers posted a season-low 13 turnovers and finished 9-12 on clear attempts. 
  • Meinhard sits tied for second on the team with four goals in three games.
  • Allen became the second player in program history to record an assist. She leads the team with 10 caused turnovers and is tied for the team lead with 10 ground balls. 
  • Lewis & Clark posted a season-low 10 shots in the game and finished 0-4 on free-position shots. 
  • Alexandra Vargas-Buell, Evelyn Burnett, Lilly Sullivan, Hamel-Hyland and Dallenbach all registered one ground ball. 
WHO'S NEXT 
 
Lewis & Clark will travel to Walla Walla, Washington this weekend for the 2024 Whit Classic. The Pioneers will take on Whitworth on Saturday at 2 p.m. and then take on the host Whitman College on Sunday at 2 p.m.
