Lewis & Clark led for over 35 minutes in the contest

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.—Hamline University scored the final four goals of the game to earn a narrow 11-7 win over Lewis & Clark College women's lacrosse in the first-ever, regular-season game in Pioneers program history on Friday night on Edor Nelson Field.

(Hamline 1-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Lewis & Clark came out of the gate red-hot in their first-ever contest and jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter and led 5-2 at halftime. The Pipers turned the tide in the second half by scoring the first four goals but Lewis & Clark answered back to tie the game at 6-6 and 7-7. A four-goal run over the final 11:14 of regulation proved to be the difference.

11 different players made their collegiate lacrosse debuts, with nine players playing in their first NCAA contest of any kind. Lewis & Clark played the entire 60-minute contest down a player.

Freshman Sage Swegle led Lewis & Clark offensively with the first hat trick in program history. Swegle scored three goals on five shots and also added a team-high four caused turnovers and finished second with five ground balls.

Fellow freshman Lauren Elliott contributed a pair of goals. She also won 10 draw controls, to go along with three caused turnovers and one ground ball.

Sophomore Kate Meinhard and freshman Finley Allen each added a goal. Meinhard chipped in three ground balls and a caused turnover and Allen notched two caused turnovers and a ground ball.

Defensively, Zoey Hamel-Hyland made three saves in each half and played the entire 60 minutes in net. Hamel-Hyland, alongside defenders Lilly Sullivan, Delaney Jones and Gloria Meehan limited the hosts to just one shot in the first quarter and seven total in the first half.

The Pioneers needed just 71 seconds to score their first goal in program history. Elliott won the initial draw control and then after Lewis & Clark used most of the shot clock, Elliott drove to the net, split a double team and finished past the goalie for a 1-0 lead.

Lewis & Clark would score their next two goals off of free-position shots. Allen made it 2-0 just past the five-minute mark (9:19) and Swegle scored her first goal with 6:51 remaining in the quarter.

Hamline would cut the deficit to 3-1 with a goal on a Nicole Phillips goal with 1:50 to go in the first.

The Pioneers continued to have success driving inside the circle early in the second quarter. Elliott made it 4-1 on a free-position goal with 12:17 to play and Swegle made it 5-1 just over a minute later (11:03).

Hamline responded with a goal just 12 seconds later (5-2) but despite the Pipers dominating possession in the quarter, they struggled to break down the Pioneers defense. Hamel-Hyland posted three saves in the quarter alone and Lewis & Clark's defense helped limit Hamline to difficult shots.

Coming out of the break, Hamline found their offensive stride and extended their run to five-straight goals to take a 6-5 lead with 5:59 left in the third. Meinhard answered with a free-position goal with 3:09 left in the quarter to even the score.

Hamline made it 7-6 early in the fourth, only for Swegle to answer back with one of the best goals of the night. After a Pipers turnover, Kate Corsaro picked up the ground ball and found Swegle who drove into the circle, slowed her run and then fired a shot just under the bar to tie the game at 7-7 with 12:44 to go.

The hosts took an 8-7 advantage with 11:14 left and then were able to finally earn their first multiple-goal lead after a pivotal sequence.

Lewis & Clark earned a pair of free position shots but one hit the post and a second slipped just past the post. On the other end, Hamline earned a free position shot of their own. The initial shot from Lily Uhl hit the crossbar but it bounced right back and Uhl scored to make it 9-7 with 9:44 to play.

Hamline would score again 13 seconds later and added their 11th and final goal with 4:44 to play to ice the game.
