HOW IT HAPPENED

With the teams facing a time crunch, the two sides agreed to play the match to decision, rather than finish all six singles matches.

Lewis & Clark proved to be competitive in all three doubles matches against the Kingsmen and freshman Noah Sutin and junior Matt Chio both were engaged in tight singles matches when the match reached 5-0.

The visitors opened the match with an 8-5 win at third doubles, when Raphael Simon and Jakob Buhler defeated Pioneers sophomores Landon Cronin and Kai Wills.

Cal Lutheran added a second 8-5 decision at second doubles. Andy Ai and James Troung were able to hold off Chio and Sutin on court two.

In the tightest of the three doubles matches, sophomore Wade McDermott and freshman Joey Lyon fell by an 8-6 score at first flight doubles.

Ai brought the Kingsmen within one point of victory at second singles. Ai knocked off Wills 6-2, 6-3.

Cal Lutheran clinched the win at number four singles. After winning an extremely tight first set, Simon defeated Lyon 7-5, 6-1.

On court one, Sutin rallied back from losing the first set and was one game away from forcing a third set. The freshman's match against Ethan Sherwood was suspended with Sherwood leading 6-3, 5-6.

Chio was playing another extremely tight match at third singles. The first set went to a tiebreaker with Loup Sudre hanging on for a 7-6 (7-2) victory. In the middle of the second set, Chio and Soudre were tied 3-3.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Monday's match was the Pioneers third match against a team from the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) in three days. The Pioneers defeated Whittier 6-3 on Saturday and fell 9-0 to #5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College on Saturday.
  • In the only other singles match to start, McDermott trailed Jake Anderson 2-1 early in the first set.
  • Monday night's match was the Kingsmen's fifth in four days against Northwest Conference teams. Cal Lutheran went 4-1, including a 5-4 win earlier on Monday at Pacific University.
