#5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Hand Men’s Tennis First Loss

Noah Sutin pushed opponent in first set before falling 7-5.

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Lewis & Clark College men's tennis faced 2023 NCAA Division III National Tournament Quarterfinalists and currently fifth-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Sunday and suffered a 9-0 setback for their first loss of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Freshman Noah Sutin challenged Ian Freer at number one singles in the first set. Despite the tough play, Sutin fell 7-5, 6-2.
 
The Stags started the morning by taking all three doubles points in order. Freshman Joey Lyon and sophomore Wade McDermott lost to Freer and Matthew Robinson 8-3 at the first doubles spot. Then Sutin and junior Matt Chio succumbed to Advik Mareedu and Warren Pham 8-4 in the second flight. Soon after, sophomores Kai Wills and Landon Cronin dropped the third singles match to Josh Kim and Tarm Rojanasoonthon 8-4.
 
The Pioneers dropped all of the singles matches in straight sets to the Stags.
 
Chio fell to Anirudh Reedy 6-0, 6-2 at the number three singles.
 
McDermott took on Kim in the fifth singles flight, losing a close match 6-3, 6-3.
 
Lyon took on Daniel Blackman in the fourth spot. He took five games in the match, falling 6-2, 6-3.
 
Wills matched Sutin in the total number of games won against his opponent at number two singles. He lost to Pham 6-3, 6-4.
 
Senior Miles Stone played the sixth singles flight and lost 6-2, 6-3 to Amar Kumar.
 
BY THE NUMBERS 
  • Prior to Sunday's match, Lyon, McDermott, and Wills had not dropped a set in singles play.
  • Seven Pioneers saw action in the dual, while the Stags utilized nine players in the match.
  • Stone played in his first singles match of the season; last year, he finished 5-2 in duals and 3-1 at the sixth spot.  
WHO'S NEXT
 
Lewis & Clark hosts California Lutheran in the tennis dome on Monday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. for their third match in as many days. On Friday, the Kingsmen defeated Puget Sound on the Lewis & Clark campus 8-1 in the tennis dome.
