WHITTIER, Calif. – Whittier College won the first point doubles point of the afternoon, but Lewis & Clark College men's tennis won the next four points and cruised to a 6-3 non-conference victory to earn their first win in California since 2020 and their first over a team from the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) since 2018.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Sophomore
Wade McDermott joined freshmen
Noah Sutin and
Joey Lyon with two victories on Saturday afternoon to lead the Pioneers over the Poets.
McDermott and Lyon picked up the first point for Lewis & Clark at number doubles. The duo defeated Ahmed Amer and Julius Clasen 8-4.

Matt Chio took the third doubles flight 8-3 over Prayag Ahire and Maas Jacobs to give the Pioneers a 2-1 lead going into singles play.
Whittier's Joey Henderson and Yash Nagdev won the second doubles match, 8-4, over sophomores
Landon Cronin and
Kai Wills.
Wills improved to 3-0 in singles play this spring as he cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Amer at third singles.
Lyon gave the Pioneers a 4-1 lead after his win at number four singles. He defeated Henderson 6-3, 6-2 for his second win of the day.
The Poets earned a point at sixth singles in straight sets. Jacobs defeated Cronin 6-2, 6-2.
The Pioneers secure the dual with a victory at the singles first flight match. Sutin earned a close 7-6 (9-7) win over Nagdev in the first set before cruising to a 6-0 second triumph.
McDermott improved to 2-0 in the dual with a 6-3, 6-4 win at the five spot over Justin Ninomiya.
Chio dropped the first set of the second singles flight 6-2 to Clasen, then fought back for a 6-4 second set win. Clausen prevailed in the third set 10-2.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Lyon and McDermott are both 6-0 to start the spring season.
- The Pioneers' win avenged a 6-3 loss at Whittier last February; Wills and McDermott went 0-2 against the Poets a year ago.
- Lewis & Clark has lost just two doubles matches this season and three singles matches.
