HOW IT HAPPENED
Prior to the contest, Lewis & Clark honored the five members of their Class of 2024. Seniors
Natalie Elstone,
Karli Mukai,
Ashley Young,
Jamison Richards and
Charlotte Carroll were joined by friends and family on the floor and celebrated their four-year careers as Pioneers.
Carroll and Richards carried the Pioneers offense for much of the afternoon. Carroll posted 17 points, her most in an NWC game this season, on 5-9 shooting. She hit all seven of her free throw attempts and added two rebounds and three steals. Richards notched 15 points on 6-14 shooting. They hit all three of the Pioneers made 3-point field goals and chipped in two assists.
Mukai and Elstone each chipped in five points. The Pioneers senior class recorded 42 of the team's 46 points.
Reigning NWC Rookie of the Year Sydney Reisner scored a game-high 21 points, including nine of the Lutes 17 fourth-quarter points. Kasidy Javernick added 15 points and eight rebounds to help the Lutes avenge a 58-55 loss in Tacoma on January 12.
Neither team could find their scoring touch in a slow first quarter. The Lutes scored their first points 3:17 into the stanza but eventually grabbed a 10-6 lead after the opening 10 minutes.
Both teams would shoot over 50 percent in the second quarter, but neither could create any separation, as the two teams each scored 18 points in the stanza. The Pioneers used a 6-0 run to briefly take the lead with 2:11 to go before halftime. Carroll started the flurry with a 3-point play and Richard added a long range three to make it 24-23 Lewis & Clark. The Lutes answered on their next possession to take the lead back and added a three-point play of their own late to grab a 28-24 halftime advantage.
Pacific Lutheran threatened to run away with the game in the third. The Lutes extended their advantage to 37-26 with 4:33 left in the quarter thanks to a 9-2 run to open the half. The deficit was still 11 with 79 seconds left in the quarter, only for Carroll and Mukai to each hit shots to make it 41-34 after three quarters.
Lewis & Clark would carry that momentum into the fourth. The Pioneers stretched their run to 16-3 to take a 46-44 lead with 4:54 to go. Carroll scored the first four points of the quarter to make it a one-possession game. After Reisner hit a three to push the lead back to six,
Kaela Guidry and Elstone hit back-to-back lay-ins to draw Lewis & Clark within two. Richards tied the game with a pull-up jumper and after a seconds-straight PLU turnover, Mukai raced down the court and hit a jumper to make it 46-44 Lewis & Clark with under five minutes to play.
Pacific Lutheran would answer right back. Reisner drained a 3-pointer on the next trip down the court (47-46 PLU) and added a 3-point play on the next Lutes possession. Javernick added six points in the final 1:37 and the Lutes hit all six of their free throws in the final minute to ice the game.
