Whitman Uses Late Goal To Slip Past Women's Soccer

Abby Hayes went over 1,500 minutes for the season

PORTLAND, Ore.—Lewis & Clark College women's soccer battled Whitman College for 90 minutes and looked primed to post their second-straight shutout, before the Blues scored in the final minute of play to earn a 1-0 win on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS

Whitman College 1, Lewis & Clark 0
(Lewis & Clark 4-10-3, Northwest Conference 2-9-2)
(Whitman 10-5-2, NWC 7-4-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Blues earned a corner kick with just over a minute to go and sent Virginia Hunt over to the corner flag. With the clock ticking under a minute, Hunt sent a left-footed, out-swinger to the edge of the six-yard box. Virginia Hunt managed to knock the ball down with her knee and Gracia Larson pounced on the loose ball and toe-poked it across the goal mouth and just inside the near post for a 1-0 lead.

The late goal denied Anna Ingadottir and the Pioneers defense a well-deserved clean sheet. Ingadottir made six saves on seven shots and looked assured all afternoon as she came off her line to cut down crosses and clean up balls at the edge of her box. The Pioneers back four of Abby Hayes, Kate Meinhard, Abby Morrow and Elle Sparks all played the full 90 minutes and came through with numerous blocked shots.

Lewis & Clark generated 11 shots with Celeste Schreifels and Megan Yanagi each posting three apiece. Grace Smith (two shots), Ava Lazzara and Iris Stutzman all posted a shot on target.

In a rematch of their most lopsided defeat of the season (6-0 at Whitman on October 6), Lewis & Clark came out and played an even game with the fourth-place team in the NWC.

Whitman held a slight 7-6 shots advantage in the first half but neither team was able to generate many shots that threatened the keepers. Schreifels had the Pioneers best look of the half in the 10th minute, when her shot from distance was deflected off a Blues player and it bounced off the top of the crossbar and out for a corner kick.

Ingadottir made two saves in the second half to keep the game scoreless and give Lewis & Clark a chance to win the contest.

The Pioneers created their best chance of the game in the 86th minute. The ball fell to Stutzman in the box and she dribbled hard to her left before sending a line drive shot that Whitman keeper Seanee Still reached up and pawed over the bar for a corner.

With under 100 seconds to go, Whitman earned their second corner kick of the game and the Blues took advantage to post their second-straight 1-0 win.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Whitman finished with a slim 15-11 advantage in shots and a 7-3 lead in shots on target. Lewis & Clark led 4-2 on corner kicks.
