Abraham Scores Late In Loss To Pirates

Micaiah Garan made four saves and went over 1,000 career minutes for his career

SPOKANE, Wash.—Junior Ishan Abraham scored with less than three minutes remaining to break up host Whitworth University's shutout bid, but it wasn't enough as Lewis & Clark College men's soccer fell 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at Whitworth Soccer Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Reigning Northwest Conference Player of the Year Cole Friesen scored twice and added two assists to help the Pirates stay unbeaten at home this year (2-0-1). Cameron Gardner and Clayton Crockett each added goals for the hosts. 
 
Abraham scored his second collegiate goal and second strike in the past four games. In the 88th minute, junior Daniel Estoll sent a cross in the box from the right side of the field. A Whitworth defender slipped in front of Abraham, leaving him one-on-one with the keeper and he sent a left-footed shot across the goal to make it 4-1. 
 
Sophomore keeper Micaiah Garan made four saves on eight shots in his third-consecutive conference start. 
 
Whitworth scored all four of their goals in a 40-minute span. After a quiet opening 25-minutes, Friesen scored his first goal of the day, an unassisted tally, in the 26th minute. 
 
Friesen made it 2-0 early in the second half when he brought down a long pass from Johnny Finnegan and sent a right-footed shot into the net at 50:17. 
 
The hosts made it 3-0 on Gardner's first goal of the season at 51:19. 
 
Whitworth closed out their scoring in the 65th minute. Crockett headed home Dominic Gusman's cross for four goals in 39:37. 
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Whitworth earned a 20-6 edge in shots and 9-4 lead in shots on goal. 
  • Abraham leads Lewis & Clark in goals this season (two) and Estoll paces the team in assists (two). 
  • The Pirates are now 4-0 against Lewis & Clark since the Pioneers reinstated varsity men's soccer. 
  • Garan has posted three or more saves in six of his seven appearances this season. The sophomore went over 1,000 career minutes played on Saturday (1,009:05).

Lewis & Clark will travel to take on Whitman College on Sunday at Noon in their second game of a three-game road trip.
