THE BASICS
Whitman 3, Lewis & Clark 1
(Lewis & Clark 0-10, NWC 0-6)
(Whitman 8-1-1, NWC 5-0-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED
For the second-straight day, Lewis & Clark broke up a shutout bid in the final three minutes, but it wasn't enough to overcome an early deficit.
Indarta scored with 72 seconds to play to earn his first collegiate marker. The Pioneers pushed the ball down the field on a counter but the long ball went all the way into the goal box where the goalie came out to play it. With the keeper well off his line, he tried to play it short to a teammate but found Indarta just outside the 18-yard box on the far side. The sophomore winger floated a high shot over the keeper and under the bar to make it 3-1.
Whitman, who came into the game with a league-high three-game winning streak, scored twice in the opening 10 minutes to take control of the game. Sawyer Valero scored his sixth goal of the season 31 seconds in, when Zachary Stonier dribbled along the goal line and sent a cut back to the middle of the net for an easy Valero tap-in.
The hosts tacked on a second goal at 9:23. This time Stonier found Kevin Serrano to make it 2-0 Whitman inside the opening 10 minutes.
Whitman added a third goal with under 15 minutes to play. Riki Kobayashi scored his second goal of the year off a feed from Takahiro Hikida.
Sophomore
Micaiah Garan and junior
Ben Tallent combined for three saves in the contest. Garan made one save on three shots in the opening 72:41, before Tallent came off the bench to make two saves on three shots in the final 17:19.
