Big First Half Leads Puget Sound Past Men's Soccer

Declan Cloutier made a season-high four saves in his first start of the season

TACOMA, Wash.—Junior Declan Cloutier made four saves in his first Northwest Conference start of the season, but host University of Puget Sound raced out to a 4-0 halftime lead and never looked back on Saturday at Baker Stadium.

THE BASICS

Puget Sound 5, Lewis & Clark 0
(Lewis & Clark 0-14, Northwest Conference 0-10)
(Puget Sound 5-4-6, NWC 4-2-6)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Cloutier earned his first appearance since Opening Day and first start of the season in the Pioneers first game during a busy stretch. The junior posted all four of his saves during the first half to post a season-high for saves.

Offensively, junior Ben Schwartz and sophomore Dylan Weinstein combined to record all the Pioneers shots. Both players finished with two shots and one shot on goal.

Puget Sound sophomore Rhys Foote scored back-to-back goals in the first 10+ minutes to give the Loggers control. Foote opened the scoring at 5:54 and added his team-leading sixth goal of the season at 10:10.

The Loggers struck for two more first-half goals in a 3:16 span. Jake Aigner made it 3-0 at 23:34 on a feed from Ian Cameron. Cameron made it 4-0 at 26:50 on a Pema Globus pass.

Lewis & Clark played a much more competitive second half. After being outshot 9-1 in the first half, they posted three of their four shots in the second half and limited the Loggers to five shots (all not on target).

Weinstein created the best looks of the day for Lewis & Clark early in the second stanza. The sophomore hit the woodwork in the 54th minute and less than a minute later he forced a save from Loggers goalie Ryan Saunders.

Leif Anderson scored the lone goal of the second half with an unassisted tally at 78:14.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Puget Sound finished with a 14-4 advantage in shots and a 9-2 lead in shots on goal.

  • Sophomore center back Emmett Olson and Cloutier both played the full 90 minutes.
  • Junior Elliot Deleger played a conference-high 14 minutes off the bench.
