Willamette Uses Second-Half Surge To Defeat Men's Soccer

Clay Scarth returned to the field for the first time in almost a month

PORTLAND, Ore.—Willamette University scored one goal in the first half and struck for three goals in the first eight minutes of the second half to take control and earn a 4-0 win over Lewis & Clark College men's soccer on Wednesday evening.

THE BASICS
Willamette 4, Lewis & Clark 0
(Lewis & Clark 0-13, Northwest Conference 0-9)
(Willamette 2-7-4, NWC 2-4-3)

HOW IT HAPPENED

In both teams' first match of the second half of the conference season, Lewis & Clark played the Bearcats even for the first 30 minutes, despite Willamette having an edge in time of possession and corners.

The Bearcats took advantage of their one good opportunity in the first half to take a 1-0 lead. Lewis & Clark cleared the ball away from their 18-yard box but only as far as Dylan Ray. Ray sent a strong cross into the box that went just over the head of a Pioneers defender and was headed home on a low shot just inside the post by Rory McKee at 32:47.

Lewis & Clark would settle down from there and keep the game at 1-0. Sophomore Dylan Weinstein posted the team's best change of the half in the 41st minute, when he sent a hard low shot just wide of the near post.

Willamette took the Pioneers out of the game in the opening eight minutes of the second half.

The Bearcats made it 2-0 less than 45 seconds into the second stanza, when Reed found Krisna LaFrance.

The visitors added a second tally at 48:17. After a Bearcats shot hit the post and bounced back out, Willamette retained possession and brought the ball back to the near side, where Sean Kim cut it back for Evan Mariscal to make it 3-0.

Willamette added a third goal on an unassisted tally from LaFrance to make it three goals in less than seven minutes and 4-0 at 52:34.

Lewis & Clark sophomore goalie Micaiah Garan made one save in each half to finish the contest with two stops.
