Bruins Score Late To Deny Men's Soccer Tie In Newberg

Sophomore Dylan Weinstein scored his first career goal

NEWBERG, Ore.—Lewis & Clark College men's soccer took their first lead of the season but host George Fox University scored with 83 seconds remaining to hand the Pioneers a heartbreaking 2-1 loss on Sunday afternoon.

THE BASICS
George Fox 2, Lewis & Clark 1
(Lewis & Clark 0-12, Northwest Conference 0-8)
(George Fox 9-2-1, NWC 5-2-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Lewis & Clark led or were tied for the first 88:37 in their closest game of the 2024 season thus far.

Sophomore Dylan Weinstein scored his first collegiate goal in the eighth minute, when he stepped up to the spot and calmly scored Lewis & Clark's first penalty attempt of the season.

Sophomore keeper Micaiah Garan made the second-most saves of his collegiate career with eight stops. He made four saves in both halves and the Pioneers added a team save in the first stanza.

Lewis & Clark took their first lead of the season at 7:13. After a Pioneers was taken down in the box without a call, Lewis & Clark recycled the ball to the top of the box and junior Aashir Walson was taken down as he tried to get on the end of a cross at the back post. The referee pointed to the spot and Weinstein sent a low shot to the keeper's right that squeezed just underneath the diving Bruins goalie.

George Fox would grow into the game from there and after seven consecutive shots they managed to find an equalizer. Eugene Peltier tied the game at 1-1 at 30:18.

Lewis & Clark would bounce back and began to create chances of their own. The Pioneers forced the Bruins to make four saves, including three from Justin Huttinger.

In the 75th minute, Lewis & Clark slipped a through ball to Walson who was one-on-one with the keeper at the top of the box. Walson managed to push the ball past the keeper but a Bruins defender streaked back and managed to knock the ball away from danger as the two players collided in the box.

Lewis & Clark went down a man in the 79th minute, when the referee issued a second yellow card to Emmett Olson

George Fox seemingly took the lead back moments later, but after a lengthy discussion, the referees wiped off Joshua Chang's go-ahead goal in the 84th minute.

Lewis & Clark was less than two minutes away from earning their first result of the season, before Isaac Williams raced on the end of a Kellin Aguiar pass and knocked it past Garan for a 2-1 advantage at 88:37.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • The Pioneers took their first lead since Nadav Dicovski scored 7:56 into the team's contest against the University of Puget Sound last fall (October 22, 2023). Weinstein's goal was the second-fastest goal scored by men's soccer since the program returned to varsity status.
  • Lewis & Clark finished with season-highs for shots (10) and shots on goal (five).
  • Garan, who set a career-high for saves on Saturday (10), added the second-most saves of his career on Sunday (eight). He ranks second in the conference with 45 saves and first with 4.50 saves per game. Ben Tallent owns the Pioneers single-season program record for saves in a season with 47.
  • Weinstein's penalty kick goal was Lewis & Clark's first award penalty kick since October 14, 2023 against Pacific. It was the first successful penalty since Ben Schwartz scored against Whitworth on October 28, 2022.
  • After allowing two goals or fewer two times in NWC play last year (16 games), the Pioneers defense eclipsed that mark today with their third such game in their first eight NWC contests.
WHO'S NEXT

Lewis & Clark will start the second half of NWC play on Wednesday night, when they host Willamette University at 7:45 p.m.
