HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pioneers played one of their best first halves of the season in conference play but the Loggers responded by outscoring Lewis & Clark 46-34 in the second half.
Washington native
Taien Jackson led the Pioneers with 14 points on 7-10 shooting off the bench. Jackson added four rebounds and tied for the team lead with two assists.
Junior
Sam Henderson was the other Lewis & Clark play in double-figures. Henderson recorded 10 points on 4-6 shooting and drained two of the Pioneers five 3-pointers (2-3). He also tied for the team lead with five rebounds.
Junior
Khalil Glover-Dodson made his second-consecutive start and recorded nine points on 4-10 shooting. Juniors
Mikey Medlock Jr. and
Isaac Ticeson finished tied for fourth on the team with eight points apiece.
Three Loggers did the majority of the scoring for the hosts. Zane Miller (20 points), Taj Phillips (15 points) and Liam Rutledge (12 points) combined for 47 points on 15-30 shooting. The rest of the team combined to shoot 11-31 with no one recording more than six points.
After struggling with slow starts to games, Lewis & Clark's new look starting lineup raced out to a 7-0 lead three minutes in. Henderson drained a 3-pointer on the opening possession of the game and then hit a layup. Sophomore
TJ Muhammad added a layup off a Loggers turnover with 17:00 to go before halftime to make it 7-0.
The Loggers briefly grabbed the lead (12-11), only for Lewis & Clark to use another 7-0 flurry to grab the lead for the rest of the half. This time it was Jackson and Ticeson who started the run and Henderson capping it off with a 3-pointer (18-12).
Lewis & Clark led by seven with just five second left in the half after
Kody Uyesugi hit a pair of free throws. Phillips hit a dagger right before the break though, as the Puget Sound junior drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make it 31-27 Pioneers.
Phillips added another three right out of the break and the Loggers took their second lead of the game on a Hugo Rutherford jumper with 19:17 to go in the game (32-31).
The two teams would trade the lead over the next two minutes, before Lewis & Clark posted their third and final 7-0 run. Trailing 40-38, Jackson scored on back-to-back possessions to make it 42-40. Glover-Dodson added a three to give the Pioneers a 45-40 lead with 15:47 to play.
Unfortunately for Lewis & Clark, Puget Sound had a big answer. The hosts went on an 8-0 run (48-45) over the next 2:35 to grab their largest lead of the game to that point. Ticeson briefly stopped the tide with a putback layup, but a 3-pointer from Miller and a layup from Will Mathews made it 52-47 with 11:37 to play.
Lewis & Clark would cut the deficit to three points on four occasions but every time the hosts were able to respond. Puget Sound extended their advantage to seven points late and Miller hit a free throw with 10 seconds remaining to give the hosts their largest lead of the game at 73-65.
