Puget Sound Knocks Off Women's Basketball In Tacoma

Karli Mukai led the Pioneers with 11 points

TACOMA, Wash.—Defending Northwest Conference Co-Regular Season Champions University of Puget Sound used a 10-0 run late in the third quarter to grab an 11-point lead and never let visiting Lewis & Clark College women's basketball back into the contest on Saturday at Memorial Field House.

THE BASICS
Puget Sound 61, Lewis & Clark 44
(Lewis & Clark 3-11, NWC 1-5)
(Puget Sound 10-5, NWC 4-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Fresh off their first NWC win of the season on Friday night, Lewis & Clark played the Loggers extremely competitively for the first 27+ minutes. The Pioneers led by as many as seven points in the second quarter and held a 11-9 edge after the first 10 minutes.

Seniors Karli Mukai and Charlotte Carroll led the Pioneers offensively. Mukai posted a team-high 11 points on 5-15 shooting and added two rebounds. Carroll just missed out on a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds (five offensive).

Fellow senior Jamison Richards ended the night third on the team with seven points and tacked on a team-leading two assists. Sophomore Emily Newton was the only other player with over five points, as she posted six points on 2-4 shooting from distance and added three rebounds.

Puget Sound senior Jordyn Reverman led all players with 17 points (6-12 shooting). Kennedy Brown (12 points) and Paige Gerhart (10 points) joined Reverman in double-figures.

After struggling mightily against the Loggers in their two meetings last season, Lewis & Clark immediately made it apparent that the matchup would be much more difficult for the hosts. The Loggers built a pair of 3-point leads in the first quarter, only for the Pioneers end the stanza on a 5-0 run to grab an 11-9 lead. Richards (3-pointer) and Mukai (layup) each hit shots late in the quarter to give Lewis & Clark the lead.

With the Pioneers trailing 15-14 with 6:39 to go before the break, the visitors went on an 8-0 run to build a 22-15 advantage. Newton drained a 3-pointer to give Lewis & Clark the lead and Carroll followed with a layup. Newton canned her second three in less than two minutes to make it 22-15 with 4:32 to go before half. Puget Sound responded with a 12-3 flurry heading into the break to grab a 27-25 lead at halftime.

The hosts threatened to keep the momentum going out of halftime and built a 31-25 lead less than a minute into the third quarter. Lewis & Clark answered with an 8-2 run that included baskets from Mukai, Natalie Elstone, Lauryn Frederickson and Zoë Anderson.

Puget Sound was finally able to wrestle control of the game with a run that started late in the third quarter and extended into the final stanza. The hosts used a 10-0 run to grab a 45-34 lead with 1:11 to go in the quarter – their largest lead of the game to that point.

The Pioneers would cut the deficit to nine at the end of the third on a Frederickson jumper (47-38), but Puget Sound would add six-straight points to start the fourth. Puget Sound would outscore Lewis & Clark 14-6 in the fourth quarter to earn the win.
