League-Leading Boxers Defeat Women's Basketball

The Pioneers posted a season-high for points in a single quarter during conference play

PORTLAND, Ore.—Lewis & Clark exploded for 27 points in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough in a 79-55 setback to league-leading Pacific University on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS
Pacific University 79, Lewis & Clark 55
(Lewis & Clark 3-12, Northwest Conference 1-6)
(Pacific 11-5, NWC 7-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Pioneers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead but Pacific was able to build a 19-10 advantage by the end of the first quarter and extended their advantage to as many as 36 late in the third quarter. Due to the L&C campus being closed due to icy conditions, Lewis & Clark had been able to practice just one day in advance of Saturday's contest.

Saturday's game was the Pioneers Alumni Game and over a dozen alumni made their way to the Portland area to support the program.

Senior Jamison Richards kept their strong run going. Richards led Lewis & Clark with 15 points on 6-10 shooting and went 3-5 from distance. The senior added two assists and tied their career-high with five steals.

Sophomore Emily Newton joined Richards in double-figures. Newton finished with 10 points, connected on two threes of her own (2-23) and added three rebounds.

Lewis & Clark post players Charlotte Carroll and Kaela Guidry each added eight points apiece to finish third on the team. Guidry tacked on a team-high six rebounds in the contest.

Pacific was led by Shaade Williams, Sydney Gray and Brilie Kovaloff. The trio all finished with 16 or more points and combined for 49 points on 17-29 shooting.

The Pioneers started the game well with Lauryn Frederickson and Richards knocking down shots in the opening 100 seconds. After a Boxers basket, Richards hit a long jumper to give the Pioneers a 6-2 lead, Pacific scored six points in a row to take their first lead of the game (8-6) midway through the first quarter. Guidry would tie the game on a second-chance basket on the next possession but that would be the last time the game would be tied the rest of the way.

Pacific would hold the Pioneers scoreless for the final 4:27 of the quarter and went on a 7-0 run to grab a 19-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.

After a difficult second and third quarter, Lewis & Clark played by far their best 10 minutes in the final stanza.

The Pioneers opened the quarter on an 10-2 run and shot 66.7 percent (10-15) over the 10 minutes.

Carroll opened the quarter with a layup on the opening possession and after a Pacific retort, the Pioneers went on an 8-0 spurt.

Richards started the flurry with a 3-pointer and then found Karli Mukai for a 3-pointer off a Boxers turnover. Carroll added a layup off of a Frederickson steal to get Lewis & Clark back within 63-38.

Richards, Carroll and Mukai all finished the quarter with six or more points in the fourth.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • The Pioneers 27 points in the fourth quarter were their most points in a quarter during conference play. Lewis & Clark had posted 19 points in a quarter twice this season. It's the most points the Pioneers have scored in a quarter during an NWC game since January 8, 2022, when Lewis & Clark scored 30 points in the fourth quarter against the University of Puget Sound.
  • Richards has now scored 15 or more points in four of the past five games. Since the calendar turned to 2024, Richards has averaged 14.4 points per game and shot 14-29 from distance (48.3 percent).
  • Lewis & Clark finished the game with a 4-2 edge in points in the paint.
  • Carroll went over 650 points for her career (656) in the contest. Carroll (656), Mukai (621) and Richards (566) are all over 550 career points in their third collegiate seasons.
 WHO'S NEXT

Lewis & Clark will practice Sunday, before playing Willamette University on Monday night at 6 p.m. The game was originally scheduled to be played on Friday night but was moved due to snow and ice on the Lewis & Clark campus.
