Lutes Defense Stifles Men’s Basketball In Second Half To Secure Win

TACOMA, Wash. – Lewis & Clark College men's basketball kept the game close for 31 minutes on Friday night, but Pacific Lutheran University exploded for 25 points in the final nine minutes to secure a 75-58 Northwest Conference win in Olson Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Juniors Isaac Ticeson (13 points) and Mikey Medlock Jr. (10 points) led the Pioneers scoring in double figures. Ticeson shot 85.7% (6-7) from the field and pulled down three rebounds. Medlock Jr. was 2-for-4 from three-point range and added three boards and two assists.
 
Griffin Datcher IV made his first three field goals of the game to extend his shooting streak to 14 consecutive field goals over four games. The junior finished with seven points on 3-for-7 shooting, with three rebounds, two assists and a steal.
 
A trio of juniors, Nate Berg, Sam Henderson, and Khalil Glover-Dodson, scored six points each to finish fourth on the team in scoring. Berg led the team with six rebounds and added a team-high three blocks. Henderson was 2-for-3 from the field with a three-pointer and second on the team with four boards. He led the team with three assists and two steals. Glover-Dodson shot 75% (3-4) from the floor with three rebounds, a steal and an assist.
 
The two teams traded baskets in a back-and-fourth opening half. Junior Sebastian DePrez drew a foul eight seconds after entering the game just before 11:00. He gave the Pioneers a 13-12 lead on a jumper during the next play. A little over 90 seconds later, DePrez found sophomore Kody Uyesugi outside the three-point line to give Lewis & Clark their largest lead of the game (18-14) with nine minutes before halftime. The Pioneers and Lutes would have five lead changes and five ties before the break, but Pacific Lutheran would prevail with the final 32-30 halftime lead.
 
Sophomore TJ Muhammad (five points) hit a three-pointer 19 seconds into the second half to give Lewis & Clark a 33-32 lead, their final of the night. Pacific Lutheran slowly built up a ten-point lead over the next six minutes and forced a timeout by the Pioneers. Lewis & Clark then went on a 12-2 run to tie the game at 50-all with 8:57 left on a layup by Datcher IV, assisted by Glover-Dodson.
 
Pacific Lutheran shot 11-for-18 the rest of the game, scoring 25 points while holding Lewis & Clark to eight points and allowing them only eight attempts from the field (3-8).
 
BY THE NUMBERS 
  • The Pioneers were held to their lowest point total of the season and the lowest since scoring 57 points at Whitworth a year ago.
  • Medlock Jr (12.1 ppg) and Ticeson (10.9 ppg) are first and second on the team in scoring this season and are the only Pioneers averaging over 10 points per game.
  • Berg leads the NWC with 18 blocks this season and is the only player in the conference averaging over a block (1.3) per game.
