Tigers Score Early to Hand Women’s Soccer 1-0 loss

Chloe Helenihi has two of Pioneers' shots on goal.

LOS ANGELES – Fifth-year Lewis & Clark College women's soccer player Chloe Helenihi had two of the Pioneers' six shots on goal, but Occidental College scored early to walk with a 1-0 non-conference win.

THE BASICS

Occidental 1, Lewis & Clark 0
(Lewis & Clark 0-3)
(Occidental 2-0-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED

After two failed corner kicks in the opening minutes of Saturday's women's soccer game, Occidental's Clare Madden snuck a shot past Lewis & Clark keeper Sophia Young in the 21st minute to score the game's lone goal.

Freshman Grace Smith was the first Pioneer to attempt to tie the match in with two shots in a span of 1:12. Her first shot in the 34th minute was saved by Tiger keeper Ingrid Odmark, and her second attempt missed the goal high.

Lewis & Clark's Mackenzie Olver entered the game in the 40th minute and immediately attacked the net with a shot that Odmark saved at the 40:19 mark.

Madden attempted to send the Tigers into the half with another goal, but Young stopped that shot in the 44th minute.

The Pioneers came out aggressive in the second half. Helenihi tried unsuccessfully to find the back of the net at the 53:47 mark and again in the 65th minute. Both times, Odmark was in the way.

In the final six minutes, Lewis & Clark had a shot stopped, one blocked, and the final attempt stopped. Sophomores Carli Driskell, Megan Yanagi, and Elle Sparks all tried to tie the game. Odmark saved Driskell's attempt in the 84th minute. After kicking an attempt wide left in the 20th minute, Yanagi had her second shot of the game blocked at 85:15. Sparks made one last attempt in the final minute, but Odmark earned her sixth save of the game at 89:27.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Young, who played all 90 minutes, had four consecutive saves to keep the Pioneers in the game.
  • Lewis & Clark had more shots on goal 6-4 than Occidental, but each team had 10 total shots.
  • Driskill, Abby Hayes, and Abby Morrow all played the full 90 minutes. Hayes and Morrow were two of the anchors for the Pioneer defense.
WHO'S NEXT

Lewis & Clark finishes their Southern California road trip at 11 a.m. on Sunday at Caltech. The Pioneers and the Beavers played to a scoreless tie last year in Pasadena.
