George Fox Snaps Women's Soccer's Unbeaten Streaks

Sophomore Megan Yanagi scored her second goal of the season

PORTLAND, Ore.—George Fox University scored a pair of second-half goals in a 12-minute span, to snap Lewis & Clark women's soccer's three-game unbeaten streak to open Northwest Conference play.

THE BASICS
George Fox 2, Lewis & Clark 1
(Lewis & Clark 3-4-1, NWC 2-1-1)
(George Fox 3-3-1, NWC 1-2-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Lewis & Clark saw their four-game overall unbeaten streak come to a close after the Bruins scored a pair of goals off free kicks to overturn an early 1-0 deficit.

Sophomore Megan Yanagi scored her second goal of the season to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead in the first half.

Senior keeper Sophia Young made three saves on five shots for Lewis & Clark. Fellow senior Abby Hayes had another strong game as the Pioneers further defender back. The center back used her speed to come up with a number of key interventions and helped limited George Fox to only a handful of chances from open play.

Despite George Fox getting off to a strong start in the first 15 minutes, it was Lewis & Clark who would strike first.

In the 22nd minute, graduate student Chloe Helenihi sent a strong cross from the far wing that was headed down by a defender in the box. Yanagi pounced on the loose ball and sent a right-footed shot back towards the far post for a 1-0 lead at 21:22.

The visitors answered in the 57th minute. Directly after a corner kick, the Bruins sent a high cross that fell in between a number of players and Hannah Beardemphl managed to get to it first and put it into an empty net.

With the momentum on their side, George Fox grabbed the lead at 67:08. Willa Evans sent a corner kick towards the top of the 18 and Maci Bowman headed it perfectly back across goal and just under the post for a 2-1 lead.

The Pioneers mustered just three shots the rest of the way, as George Fox consistently kept bodies behind the ball and made it difficult on the Pioneers to generate good chances.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Lewis & Clark outshot the Bruins 13-9 and both teams finished with five shots on goal. George Fox held a slim 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
  • Yanagi and senior Celeste Schreifels are tied for the team lead with two goals apiece.
  • Yanagi and freshman Grace Smith finished tied for the team-lead with three shots.
