HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pioneers controlled possession Friday afternoon against the Eagles and had nine shots on goal before junior
Abby Hayes booted a free kick from about 40 yards out and found Schreifels in the box, who chest-trapped the ball and then chipped it past Northwest's Ria Schwartz for the first score of the game.
Earlier in the half,
Kate Meinhard had the best chance to put the Pios on the board in the 70
th minute with a header off a corner kick from fellow sophomore
Carson Warfield. The Eagles midfielder, Elizabeth Moretti, saved that ball at the right post.
Northwest scored the equalizer goal in the 81
st minute and the go-ahead goal just under six minutes later. Lewis & Clark senior goalkeeper
Sophia Young saved the first four shots she faced in the game.
Fifth-year student-athlete
Chloe Helenihi made her return to the pitch after missing last season with an injury. The forward played 57 minutes off the bench with a game-high four shots in her return and one on goal.
Reigning Northwest Conference Rookie of the Year,
Megan Yanagi tied Schreifels with a game-high two shots on goal.
Three players made their collegiate debut on Friday. Freshman
Grace Smith started the game for the Pioneers and played 77 minutes, while fellow classmates
Rowan Levandoski and
Mischa Vanek came off the bench and each had a shot in the game.
