HOW IT HAPPENED

2022 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Scholatic Newcomer of the Year Etienee Casanova scored a pair of goals on either side of halftime to help Caltech defeat the Pioneers.Ā

Tallent (five saves) earned the start in the men's soccer opener for the second-straight season and kept Lewis & Clark in the game. He made several point blank saves and a key kick save to keep the score at 1-0 until the 39
thĀ minute.Ā

Garan, one of two freshman keepers on the roster, made his collegiate debut to start the second half and picked up three saves on four shots. He immediately saw a ton of traffic in front and made several key catches on crosses and a diving save just before the third Beavers goal of the night.Ā

Jack Myles scored the opening goal for the visitors who are coming off one of their best seasons in the past three decades. Myles picked up a loose ball near midfield and drove into the box while looking for a passing lane, before deciding to take a tight-angled shot that snuck inside the post at 10:58.Ā

The visitors doubled their lead at 38:38, when Andy Dimnaku centered a pass for Casanova at the top of the box and Casanova ripped a shot into the near corner for a 2-0 edge.Ā

After putting together several promising ventures into the box in the first half with no shots to show for it, Lewis & Clark came out much stronger in the second stanza.Ā

Ben Schwartz posted the first shot of the second half for either side, when he lifted a shot over the bar in the 48

Caltech made it 3-0 at 54:43. Garan made a diving stop to deny Ishaan Mantripragada but the rebound bounced out to Casanova who scored from the top of the six-yard box.Ā

Nadav Dicovski came on for the final 15 minutes and constantly was buzzing around the ball. He sent a pair of shots wide including a bicycle attempt in the 89

Lewis & Clark had their best chance of the game to score in the waning seconds. After a foul on the Beavers,
Wesley Esparza Salazar sent a free kick into the box. The ball bounced off a defender and freshman
Nathaniel Pi-Sunyer sent a header just over the bar from close range.Ā
