HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lutes scored the final six runs in game one and final three in game two to earn a series split with the Pioneers. With the two losses, Lewis & Clark's path to reach the four-team Northwest Conference Tournament becomes tougher but they still have a chance heading into the final six games of the season.
Junior
Mari Alvarez and senior
Kalea Kaui each finished with two hits and a walk to lead the Pioneers offensively.
GAME ONE RECAP
Lewis & Clark took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first but Pacific Lutheran scored in each of their final three at-bats to claim a 6-1 victory.
Kaui recorded two of the Pioneers three hits in game (2-3). Freshman
Emily Patton added a single and freshman
Tallulah Sickels, sophomore
Riley Anderson and Alvarez each worked a walk.
In the circle, Sickels held the hosts in check for the first three innings. She finished the game allowing five hits and three earned runs in 4.1 innings.
Lewis & Clark got to Lutes ace Cassidy Conrad in the first. Alvarez worked a leadoff walk, Kaui singled with one out and Anderson walked to load the bases. With two outs, Sickels worked a bases-loaded walk to give the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage.
Pacific Lutheran would put runners on in each of the first three innings but Sickels was able to induce eight groundouts to keep the Lutes off the scoreboard.
The hosts grabbed the lead in the fourth. After a leadoff hit by pitch, Paola Garcia hit a home run just over the center field fence to make it 2-1 PLU.
PLU tacked on one more run in the fifth and three in the sixth to extend their lead to 6-1.
GAME TWO RECAP
The Pioneers jumped off to another early lead and freshman
Maggie O'Leary kept the hosts in check until the seventh, before the hosts used a pair of late home runs to earn the sweep.
O'Leary was terrific in the circle. She scattered just four hits two walks and no runs through the first six innings.
Alvarez led the offense with two doubles and one run. Patton added an RBI single and Kaui finished with a walk and an RBI.
Katie Ingersoll and
Madison Scroggins each added a single.
Alvarez led off game two with a double just over the glove of the right fielder. Patton followed with a single to center to give the Pios a 1-0 advantage.
Lewis & Clark had a chance to extend their lead in the fourth. Scroggins led off with a bunt single and Ingersoll followed with a bunt single to put two on with no outs. Senior
Lindsey Flegel advanced both runners with a sac bunt but Pacific Lutheran threw out the lead runner on a fielder's choice and then struck out the next batter to keep it 1-0.
Alvarez helped Lewis & Clark push the lead to 2-0 in the fifth. She opened the inning with another double. Her pinch runner,
Lola Jarrette, took third on a sac bunt and then scored on a crazy play. Jarrette was caught in a pickle between third base and home on a Kaui grounder, but she kept the run down going long enough for the Lutes to throw the ball away and allow her to score.
While the Pioneers were building their lead, O'Leary was keeping the Lutes at bay. She stranded a single runner in five of the first six innings-including working around a one-out double in the second.
Pacific Lutheran finally broke through in the seventh. Emma Ware led off the frame with a pinch-hit single and Garcia hit her second two-run homer of the game to tie the score at 2-2. After a one-out walk, senior
Alyssa Abe came on in relief. Abe retired the first two batters she faced to send the game to extras.
The Lutes won the game in the bottom of the eighth. Abe retired the first two batters she faced in the eighth, before Kennedy Kila hit a home run just over the right-field fence to give the hosts a walk-off win.
