GAME ONE RECAP
After a slow offensive day on Wednesday at Pacific Lutheran, Lewis & Clark struck for seven runs in their first four at-bats and held off a late George Fox rally for an 8-7 win.
Anderson, freshman
Emily Patton and junior
Alyssa Hoeke each finished with two hits and drove in at least one run. Anderson finished 2-4 with one run and five RBI. Patton went 2-4 with a pair of RBI singles and Hoeke chipped in two hits in three at-bats, with two runs scored and the game-winning RBI.
Junior
Mari Alvarez reached three times on a single and two hit by pitches and added a run scored.
In the circle, senior
Alyssa Abe earned her fifth win of the season. She retired the first 12 batters she faced before giving up three-straight hits and three runs to start the fifth. Freshman
Charlize Pope came on in relief and went the next 2+ innings and gave up two hits and four runs (three earned). Freshman
Maggie O'Leary came on to get the final three outs and posted her first collegiate save.
Alvarez opened the bottom of the first with a single, took second on a
Kalea Kaui walk and both runners walked home after Anderson hit a home run to right-center field.
The Pios manufactured a run in the second. With two outs, Hoeke reached on an error, took second on an Alvarez hit by pitch and raced home on a Patton bloop single into left-center field.
The Pios added three more runs in the fourth. Freshman
McKenna Zehnder singled with one out and Hoeke followed with an infield single. After an Alvarez hit by pitch loaded the bases, Patton ripped a single through the right side to score
Pippi Jepsen. With two down, Anderson rocketed a liner off the shortstop's glove into left field to plate Hoeke and
Gina Ozuna.
George Fox responded with three runs of their own in the top of the inning. Each of the first two batters singled and Aliya Harmon followed with a home run to right-center to end Abe's day. Pope came on to retire the next three batters to keep it 7-3.
Lewis & Clark added a key insurance run in the bottom of the inning.
Sam Gildersleeve just missed a home run with a double off the wall in left-center and she came in to score on a Hoeke single to left field with two outs.
Kamryn Potter made it 8-4 with a solo home run to lead off the top of the sixth and the Bruins tried to come all the way back in the seventh. After a walk and an error to start the inning, Brooke Riggins hit a fly ball just over the left-field fence to bring the visitors within one at 8-7. O'Leary came on for Pope and the first batter Kimberly Pulido hit a long fly to center field that was going to go over the fence, but Hoeke reached up and snagged it for a loud first out. O'Leary struck out the next batter and retired Potter on a groundout to end the game.
GAME TWO RECAP
For the second-straight day, Lewis & Clark led 2-0 into the later innings before a late comeback spoiled a strong outing from O'Leary.
O'Leary went the full seven innings for the second time in her collegiate career and allowed three runs, two earned. She scattered five hits and three walks and struck out three.
George Fox ace Ashley Davis gave up four hits and two earned runs, while striking out nine.
Patton was the lone Pioneer with multiple hits (2-3) in the contest.
McKenna Zehnder went 1-2 with her first collegiate home run and
Lindsey Flegel added a single and a run scored.
George Fox threatened to open the scoring in the top of the third. With two runners in scoring position and just one out, O'Leary struck out Sydney Sandifer and induced a pop out to keep the game 0-0.
In the bottom of the third, Flegel snapped a streak of seven-straight batters retired to open the game for Davis. The Pios catcher laced a single to left for her second hit of the season and Zehnder followed with a high fly ball that easily cleared the left-field fence to make it 2-0 Lewis & Clark.
George Fox got one run back in the fourth. The Bruins used a check-swing single and a hit by pitch to put two on and both runners advanced a base on a passed ball with one out. Riggins made it 2-1 when she hit a fly ball to right that proved to be just deep enough to score Emma Classen from third base.
The Bruins took the lead in the top of the sixth. Harmon doubled with one out and took third on a groundout. Riggins came through with her fifth and sixth RBI of the day when she hit a home run just over the fence in center to make it 3-2 Bruins.
Lewis & Clark had an excellent chance to tie in the bottom of the sixth. Patton singled with one out and took second on a misplay by the shortstop. With two down, Anderson floated a soft fly ball to right and Potter made a diving catch in shallow right to deny Anderson a hit and the tying run to score.
O'Leary stranded the bases loaded in the top of the seventh with a big strikeout but Davis retired the Pioneers in order in the bottom of the inning to close out the game.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Anderson snapped a seven-game streak without a home run in game one. Her five RBI are tied for her most in a single-game this season (three times). She now sits all alone in second in program history for home runs in a single-season (11) and first in RBI (44).
- With the win, the Pioneers are tied with the 1992 team (18-16) for the third-most wins in program history. Only the 1990 team (22-13-1) and 2001 team (22-18-1) won more games in a single-season.
- Freshman Madison Scroggins hit her first collegiate triple in game one.
- Flegel's single in game two was her first hit since February 19 at Occidental. The senior catcher, who often serves as the flex, snapped an 0-10 streak with the base hit.
- Lewis & Clark is still in the hunt for the fourth and final spot in the Northwest Conference Tournament. Whitworth (13-11) leads Lewis & Clark (10-14) by three games with four games to play and owns the tiebreak. Lewis & Clark will need to sweep Willamette (8-16 NWC) and needs George Fox (16-8) to sweep Whitworth this weekend.
