SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.—Sophomore
Riley Buese broke a program record that had stood for over a decade to lead Lewis & Clark outdoor track & field on Day 1 of the Mike Fanelli Classic in San Francisco.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Buese opened the meet in a huge way with a PR and a program record in the first event of the three-day meet. Buese was one of 35 entrants in the women's 10,000m run that included student-athletes from all three NCAA Divisions.
She crossed the finish line in 36:22.98 to finish fifth out of 35 runners. Buese's time was a new PR by over a minute and broke Emily Thomas' program record in the event that she set in 2012.
Junior
Katya Schwieterman was the next Pioneer to compete. Schwieterman raced in the third of three heats of the women's 3K Steeplechase. Schwieterman finished fourth in her heat and 25
th overall when she came across in 11:52.06.
The Pioneers men's teams had a pair of entrants in the men's 3K Steeplechase.
Junior
Nate Bay raced in the third of four heats and finished ninth in his heat and 34
th out of 49 total competitors. Bay posted a PR time of 10:00.25 to stay in 35
th place in program history. Fellow junior
Brendan Creeks was just behind him. Creeks raced in the fourth section of the Steeplechase and ended his race fourth in his heat and 35
th overall with a time of 10:01.58.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Buese, who won the 10K at last year's Northwest Conference Championship Meet, shaved off one minute and 1.22 seconds off her PR time in last year's NWC race.
- Bay improved his PR in the 3K Steeplechase by 3.95 seconds.
- Buese's time broke the previous program record by 15.10 seconds.
- Schwieterman's time of 11:52.06 would be the 6th fastest time in program history, except for the fact that she posted a faster PR last season when she crossed the line in 11:45.60 (6th all-time).
- Buese's time puts her second in all of Division III heading into the weekend.
WHAT'S NEXT
Lewis & Clark will have a larger contingent of long distance runners compete at the Mike Fanelli Classic on Friday.
