OREGON CITY, Ore.—Freshmen
Jonathan Fritz and
Andrew Baum each earned top-two finishes to lead Lewis & Clark College men's track & field on Day 1 of the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pioneers racked up three top-three finishes and five of their six entrants reached the finals in their events on Friday afternoon at Clackamas Community College.
Baum started off the day with a strong showing in the hammer throw. The Pioneers freshman sat in first place through the first three throws (37.84m) and then threw a collegiate PR heave of 39.20m (128-07) on his fifth attempt to solidify his spot in second place.
Fritz led four Pioneers throwers in the javelin.
The Pios freshman multi-athlete sat fourth after his first throw (41.68m), moved into third (44.15m) on his second toss and then threw a collegiate best mark of 46.43m (152-04.00 feet) on his third throw to finish in second place.
Senior
Sean Bodi, who was making his collegiate debut in the event, posted his two best marks on his first and final throws. He opened the meet with a then PR of 38.46m and then on his final heave launched the javelin 38.54m (126-05.00 feet) to finish in sixth place.
Freshman
Nick Stade took eighth in the javelin after he cleared 31 meters with his third throw. The Pios multi-athlete threw 31.22m (102-05.00) on his third and final prelims throw to earn a spot in the finals.
Freshman
Andrew Fletcher was also making his debut in the javelin. He improved with each of his first threw collegiate marks and finished the meet with a distance of 22.19m (72-09.00 feet).
Stade added a third-place showing in the pole vault. He cleared each of the first three heights (11-11.50 feet, 12-05.50 feet and 12-11.50 feet) on his second attempt, before failing to clear 13-05.25 feet
BY THE NUMBERS
- Baum moved into 25th in program history in the hammer throw (39.20m). He is the first student-athlete to crack the top 25 since 2018, when Andrew Werst threw 40.19m.
- Stade's mark of 3.95m in the pole vault is 26th in program history.
- Fritz's mark of 46.43m in the javelin ranks 47th in program history.
WHO'S NEXT
The Pioneers will return to action on Saturday, when the Spring Break Open moves to campus. The track events will begin at 10 a.m. and the field events will kick off at 11 a.m.
