Portland, Ore. – Lewis & Clark College won their first matches in a head-to-head competition Friday evening against NAIA Jessup University, but it wasn't enough as they fell 5-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pioneers jumped out to an early 2-1 lead at the conclusion of doubles play. Senior
Kristian Peev and freshman
Landon Cronin teamed up in the number one doubles match, defeating Roger Wen and Kadyn Silva of Jessup 8-6. The freshman team of
Kai Wills and
Wade McDermott lost their match 8-4 to Sam Smith and Austrebeto Carlon in the number two doubles match. Senior
Alberto Dos Santos and sophomore
Matt Chio secured the early lead for Lewis & Clark with an 8-6 win over Mihnea Secara and Isaac Graves.
"After a disappointing outing last night, the guys did their best to turn it around against William Jessup," said head coach
Jimmy Chau. "Their mentality and approach to matches changed dramatically, and we're just looking to build off of this."
The Warriors regained the lead with wins in the number two, three, and four singles matches. Dos Santos was the first Pio to fall with a 6-4, 6-2 loss in the number four match. Cronin was the next Pio to succumb to a Warrior, dropping the number two match 6-3, 6-2. Jessup extended their dual lead to 4-2 with a win in the number three match as Chio fell 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
Peev closed the gap for the Pioneers with his second win of the night. He took the number one match over Wen 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), 6-4.
Lewis & Clark started the final two singles matches down 4-3 in the overall scoring. Wills took on Secara in the number five match, and McDermott took on Graves in the number six. Both matches were close, but the Pios could not grab both wins to secure the dual. The number five match finished first, with Wills losing 7-5, 6-4. McDermott won the number six in three sets, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 6-4.
"Our first years are getting some valuable playing experience, and we're just getting started," added Chau. "Looking forward to some warmer playing conditions this week in California."
BY THE NUMBERS
- Junior Miles Stone won an exhibition match against Tanner Sitanggang 6-3, 6-2.
- Junior Logan Hausler won an exhibition pro-set against Jordan Lenney 8-2.
- Peev finished last season 16-12 overall and 10-4 in singles.
- Chio and Dos Santos finished last season tied with the most doubles wins with seven. Chio was 7-4, while Dos Santos was 7-6.
