PORTLAND, Ore. – Lewis & Clark men's tennis broke into the win column on Sunday afternoon, for the first time this season, with a decisive 9-0 win over Willamette University in a non-conference dual.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pioneers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the doubles portion of the match. Senior
Kristian Peev and freshman
Wade McDermott earned their first win at No. 1 doubles with an 8-2 win over Andrew Kabacy and Quentin Nigbur. Freshman
Kai Wills and sophomore
Matt Chio defeated Velibor Mladenovic and Andrew Kropp 8-3 at No. 2 doubles. Senior
Alberto Dos Santos and junior
Logan Hausler teamed up for the first time in their careers to defeat Andre Lief and Luca Casano 8-6 at the No. 3 spot.
Dos Santos earned the first singles point for the Pioneers. He defeated Mladenovic in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2 singles.
Peev picked up his third win of the season at No. 1 singles. He took down Kabacy for the second time on Sunday by a score of 7-5, 7-5 to secure the Pioneers team win.
Wills' opponent at No. 4 singles was also one of his doubles opponents earlier in the afternoon. Wills came from behind and defeated Kropp 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.
McDermott had the most dominant singles win at the No. 5 spot. He earned a double bagel, 6-0, 6-0 over Lief.
Chio earned his first win of the season at No. 3 singles with a come-from-behind victory over Nigbur, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Sophomore
Bennett Gazor made his season debut in singles Sunday. He easily dispatched Jake Freeland, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 6 singles.
BY THE NUMBERS
- The Pioneers won their 15th straight match against the Wildcats, dating back to March 7, 2014.
- During the streak, the Pioneers have won by a combined score of 128-7.
- Junior Miles Stone teamed up with Gazor in a doubles exhibition match against Freeland and Spencer Chase. Stone and Gazor won 8-1.
- Stone, Hausler, and freshman Spencer Loucks all played exhibition singles matches against Willamette. Stone defeated Garrett Thornhill 8-2.
