Baseball Sweeps Lutes To Earn NWC Series Win

Jakob Ghammachi went 5-9 with seven RBI on Sunday

TACOMA, Wash.—Lewis & Clark College baseball used a late game one rally and carried that momentum into game two, to earn a doubleheader sweep of Pacific Lutheran University and earn a Northwest Conference series victory on Sunday.Ā
Ā
THE BASICS
Lewis & Clark 15, Pacific Lutheran 11 (NWC Game)
Lewis & Clark 14, Pacific Lutheran 2 (6 Innings – Non-Conference)
(Lewis & Clark 10-2, NWC 2-1)Ā
(Pacific Lutheran 6-5, NWC 1-2)Ā

HOW IT HAPPENED
Ā
Trailing 8-4 going into the seventh of game one, Lewis & Clark scored five runs in each of the the next two inningsĀ to stun the Lutes and clinch a road series win in their opening weekend of NWC play. The Pios tacked on six runs in the top of the first of game two and added eight more runs in the sixth to finish the weekend 3-1.Ā
Ā
Junior Jakob Ghammachi had a huge day for the Pios. He went 5-9, with three runs, seven RBI, three doubles, two walks and a stolen base.Ā
Ā
GAME ONE RECAPĀ
Ā
Lewis & Clark sent nine batters to the plate in the seventh and eighth innings to turn an 8-4 deficit into a 14-8 lead and junior Anthony Clerici closed the door to secure a series win.Ā
Ā
Senior Dylan Moore, Ghammachi and Thomson all had huge games at the plate.Ā
Ā
Moore went 3-4 with four runs, two RBI, two doubles, a walk and a hit by pitch. Ghammachi posted RBI hits in each of the final three innings and ended the game 3-5 with one run, four RBI, two doubles of his own and a walk. After Thomson hit a solo home run, his fourth of the weekend, in his first at-bat, Pacific Lutheran avoided giving him anything to hit the rest of the way. The reigning NWC Offensive Player of the Year finished 1-5 with five runs, two RBI and five walks-three of which were intentional.Ā
Ā
The Pios took an early 2-0. In the first, Thomson walked and sophomore Brennen Davis doubled to left-center to put the Pios on the board. Thomson added a solo shot in the third to make it 2-0.Ā
Ā
Pacific Lutheran answered with four in the third and tacked on runs in each of the next three innings to make it 8-4.Ā
Ā
The Pios got back into the game thanks to their patience in the seventh. Each of the first five batters walked, with sophomore Will Heron and Moore each working a bases-loaded free pass. Ghammachi followed with an epic at-bat. The junior DH worked a 12-pitch at-bat, before beating reliever Chris Moreno with an RBI single through the right-side. Junior catcher John Delaney followed with an RBI walk to tie the game and the Pios took the lead on a double play that scored Moore.Ā
Ā
Lewis & Clark repeated their success in the eighth. With the bases loaded and one out, Moore was hit by a pitch and Ghammachi followed with a double just inside the left-field line to score Davis and Luke Bass. With two down, Jack Savant delievered an RBI single and Thomson worked a non-intentional walk to score Ghammachi.Ā
Ā
Pacific Lutheran cut the deficit to 14-11 in the bottom half of the eighth inning and had the bases loaded with one out. Clerici came on and struck out the first two batters he faced, before retiring the side in order in the ninth.Ā
Ā
GAME TWO RECAPĀ
Ā
Despite using a very different looking lineup, Lewis & Clark scored six in the first and eight more in the sixth, to wrap up the weekend with a third-straight win over the Lutes.Ā
Ā
Freshman Brandon Gonzaga, Ghammachi and Davis all posted multiple hits and RBI. Gonzaga went 2-4 with a run scored and two RBI out of the nine-hole. Ghammachi tacked on two hits, two runs, three RBI and a double. Davis finished 2-3 with two runs, two RBI, a double and a walk.Ā
Ā
Freshman Ryan Sanderson was the final Pioneer with multiple hits. He registered two hits in three at-bats, with two runs, an RBI and a double.Ā
Ā
Senior Kris Wuelfing was stellar in his second start of the year. Wuelfing went the opening four innings and scattered six hits, one walk and two runs, while striking out three. He moved to 2-0 on the year after the game was ended after six.Ā

Freshman Nathan Kerr and senior Kevin Kane added a scoreless inning apiece in relief for Lewis & Clark.Ā
Ā
The Pios sent 12 batters to the plate in the top of the first, en-route to their third inning of five runs or more in the past four total frames. Davis opened the scoring with an RBI double that scored law-school student Jacob Serafini. Ghammachi added an RBI double of his own. With two down and the bases loaded, Pacific Lutheran went to their bullpen. Senior Blake Tellinghusen worked a bases-loaded walk, Gonzaga drove in two with a single and Thomson posted yet another walk to score Tellinghusen.Ā
Ā
After Pacific Lutheran cut the deficit to 6-2 in the fourth, Lewis & Clark ended any chance of a comeback in the sixth. With the sun setting, Lewis & Clark scored eight runs on five hits, three walks and two hit by pitches-all with two outs.Ā
Ā
Davis walked, stole second and scored on a Ghammachi RBI single to start the rally. Ghammachi singled and senior Henry Goodier walked to put two on. Senior Mason Lee tripled to right to score both runners and make it 9-0. Sanderson (double) and freshman Joaquin Sandoval (single) followed with RBI hits and the Pios closed the inning with bases-loaded free passes to Davis (hit by pitch) and Ghammachi (walk).Ā
Ā
