Los Angeles, Calif. – Lewis & Clark College men's tennis concluded their Southern California road trip Sunday morning against Occidental College with a 9-0 loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The 9-0 score only shows part of the story in the Pioneers' match play against the Tigers as two sets went into tiebreaks and three sets were one by Occidental players by two games.
In the number one doubles match, senior
Kristian Peev and freshman
Landon Cronin went into a tiebreak against Matthew O'Connor and Seth Lipe, losing the match 8-7 (7-2). The freshman team of
Wade McDermott and
Kai Wills dropped their doubles match 8-4. Junior
Miles Stone made his season debut for the Pioneers as he teamed up with sophomore
Bennett Gazor. Stone and Gazor lost their doubles match 8-5.
Peev gave his all against O'Connor in the number-one spot in singles. He lost the match 7-5, 6-4.
In number six singles Wills and Dennis Isak went into a tiebreak in the first set. Isak prevailed 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 in the match.
Sophomore
Matt Chio dropped the first set of the number three singles 6-4 to Ace Andres. The second set was won 6-0 by Andres.
Cronin and McDermott played singles in the number two and number five spots, respectively. Cronin fell 6-3, 6-2 to Ronald Chen, and McDermott lost to Ridley Potter 6-2, 6-3.
Senior
Alberto Dos Santos played in the number four singles match, losing to Isaac Herrenkohl 6-2, 6-1.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Peev and Cronin are 2-3 as a team in the number one doubles spot this season.
- Stone played all his doubles matches in the number three spot last year and finished with a 5-9 record in that slot.
- This is the first trip for the Pioneers to the Golden State in three years when they went 1-1.
