Men’s Basketball Erases 11-Point Deficit, falls 68-66 to Prairie Fire

HONOLULU, Hawaii. – Four Pioneers scored in double-digits as Lewis & Clark College men's basketball erased an 11-point second-half deficit, but Knox College held on for the 68-66 win at the Hoops in Hawaii Classic on Thursday afternoon in the Hawaii Pacific University Shark Tank.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Isaac Ticeson (12 points) led a quartet of juniors in double-digits while adding two blocks, a steal and an assist. Sam Henderson (11), Nate Berg (10), and Khalil Glover-Dodson (10) all scored ten or more points against the Prairie Fire.
 
Junior Griffin Datcher IV (four points) grabbed five rebounds to lead Lewis & Clark on the boards. Senior Nikko Echalas (four points), junior Mikey Medlock Jr. (seven points) and Berg all had four rebounds for the Pioneers.
 
Sophomores Kody Uyesugi (five points), Taien Jackson (two points), and TJ Muhammad (one point) rounded out the scoring for Lewis & Clark in the loss.
 
Medlock Jr. hit a three to open up the game, and Ticeson made a fast break layup at 17:51 as the Pioneers took their first of three five-point (7-2) leads in the first half. The Prairie Fire tied the game at 11-all at 14:53, and the two teams traded baskets over the next six and half minutes. Lewis & Clark then went on an 8-3 run to take a 30-25 lead with just under 5:30 left. Knox tied the game at 30 two minutes later, but a Uyesugi layup and a three by Henderson pushed the lead back out by five with 1:30 to go before the break. Echalas made two free throws with five seconds left to give the Pioneers a 37-34 advantage at halftime.
 
Knox went up 42-40 at the 16:41 mark to take their first lead since 17-16 at 12:04 in the first half. Over the next seven-plus minutes, the Prairie Fire would outscore the Pioneers 18-9 to take either team's largest lead of the game, 60-49 at 9:09. Ticeson, Uyesugi, and Glover-Dodson would combine for a 10-0 Lewis & Clark run to cut the lead to one with 6:25 left in the game. The two teams would trade baskets before the Prairie Fire would hold a 68-63 advantage at the 2:34 mark. Ticeson made one of two free throws, and Glover-Dodson went 2-for-2 in the next minute to make it 68-66. Neither team scored in the final 1:34 of the game.
 
BY THE NUMBERS 
  • Echalas and Datcher IV finished with three assists each.
  • Henderson (4-5), Glover-Dodson (4-6), and Uyesugi (2-3) all shot 66.6% or better from the field.
  • Lewis & Clark held the lead for 18:49, while Knox was up for 17:32 in the game that was tied five times and had seven lead changes.
  • The Pioneers are 2-2 in one-possession games this season.
