Men's Soccer Puts Together Strong Effort Against Blues

Junior Wesley Esparza Salazar posted his first collegiate assist

PORTLAND, Ore.—Lewis & Clark College men's soccer played one of their most competitive matches of the season on Saturday afternoon in their penultimate game of the 2023 season.

THE BASICS
Whitman 4, Lewis & Clark 1
(Lewis & Clark 0-18-1, Northwest Conference 0-14-1)
(Whitman 7-7-5, Northwest Conference 6-4-4)

HOW IT HAPPENED

After giving up two goals inside the first 12 minutes, Lewis & Clark cut the lead in half in the 14th minute and went back-and-forth with the visiting Blues, before Whitman tacked on two goals in the final 15 minutes.

Freshman Nathaniel Pi-Sunyer scored his first collegiate conference goal and second goal of his collegiate career. Junior Wesley Esparza Salazar posted the assist on the goal for his first collegiate helper.

Sophomore goalie Declan Cloutier made two saves in his fifth start of the conference season.

Whitman opened the scoring 3:35 into the contest. Christian Gomez collected a blocked shot and laced a perfectly placed shot underneath the bar.

The visitors doubled their advantage at 11:08. Jacob Burrill forced a turnover in the Pioneers defensive third and dribbled in before placing a shot inside the near post to double the advantage.

With the Pioneers backs against the wall, Lewis & Clark responded in a positive manner.

Lewis & Clark cut the deficit to 2-1 at 13:19. On a long outlet pass, Nadav Dicovski won the second ball and sent a pass out wide for Esparza Salazar. The junior caught up to the pass, dribbled past a defender at the edge of the box and sent a cut back pass through a sea of traffic. Pi-Sunyer ran on to the ball at the top of the box and sent a low left-shooted shot that went off the keeper's fingertips and in.

From there, Lewis & Clark would continue to pressure the Blues and create chances.

Dicovski had a number of looks off corner kicks and Esparza Salazar added a strong late look.

Whitman put the game to bed with a goal from Pablo Gonzalez, Jr. off a corner kick (74:32) and a tally just over two minutes later from Christian Gomez.
