HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pirates jumped out to a 2-0 lead inside the first 17 minutes but were held to just one goal the rest of the way as the Pioneers put up a spirited display on a rainy day at Griswold Stadium.
Tallent gave up the two early goals but grew into the game in a big way. He stopped all six shots he faced in the second half and his 10 saves were the third-most of his career.
Sophomore
Ishan Abraham and freshman
Nadav Dicovski combined for five shots and had the best chances for the Pioneers. Lewis & Clark grew into the game offensively and recorded nine shots alone in the second half. Abraham had several good looks including a half volley from the top of the box that went just wide. Dicovski headed a corner kick down but it bounced just past the post midway through the second half.
Whitworth sophomore Cole Friesen scored a first-half brace for his league-leading 23
rd and 24
th goals of the season. Christian Pumpelly scored 6:16 into the game for his first goal of the season.
The visitors took the lead in the seventh minute off a through ball that made it past multiple players and resulted in an easy tap in for Pumpelly.
Friesen scored his two goals (16:31 and 43:45) off strong passing from his teammates. Clayton Crockett found Friesen inside the box in the 17
th minute and Friesen sent a low shot inside the post for a 2-0 advantage. He made it 3-0 at 43:45 off tic-tac-toe passing from Caden Martin and Crockett.
