Women’s Soccer Out Shoots Blues in 3-1 Loss

Grace Smith records first collegiate assist on Megan Yanagi goal.

WALLA WALLA, Wash. –Lewis & Clark College women's soccer bounced back a day removed from producing season-low shots on goal by more than tripling their shots on target in a 3-1 Northwest Conference road loss to Whitman College.

THE BASICS

Whitman 3, Lewis & Clark 1
(Lewis & Clark 4-7-1, NWC 3-4-1)
(Whitman 7-3-3, NWC 5-2-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Freshman Grace Smith booted a corner kick from the far arc, found the head of a leaping Megan Yanagi at the near post, and the sophomore sent the ball across the line at the far post with a back header to record her third goal of the year late in the 86th minute. Smith notched her first collegiate assist on the play, but the Pioneers still faced a two-goal deficit with a little over four minutes to play.

Yanagi led the team with four shots in the game, all on target. Her first was from the top right of the box at 12:33, but Blues keeper Hannah Hagler was there to prevent the score.

Whitman's first goal at 17:36 came as Virginia Hunt took a corner kick from the near arc and found the head of Kiki Glorioso, who sent the ball past the hands of a diving Sophia Young and into the top left corner of the net.

Sophomore Carson Warfield gave the Pioneers their best chance at an equalizer in the first half with a free kick at 42.32 from distance. Warfield's kick sailed into Hagler's hands at the near post.

Abby Morrow sent two shots toward the goal early in the second half in an attempt to tie the game. The sophomore's first was a hard kick from a distance that sailed into the hands of the Blues keeper. The second came off a free kick that found Morrow in the middle of the box, and a diving Hagler saved her shot to the low left corner.

Warfield found Yanagi in the middle of the box in the 70th minute, but her header couldn't make it past Hagler.

Whitman put the game out of reach with two goals in the second half. The first was a corner from the far arc to the far post, and the Blues' Molly Beaulieu found Glorioso in the middle of the box, who just tapped it past Young at 61:21. At 66:29, Leah Barnes found a penetrating Virginia Hunt to put the Blues up 3-0.
