Women’s Soccer’s Final October Home Game Ends in 0-0 Tie

Pioneers' defense allows a season-low one shot on goal in 90 minutes of play.

PORTLAND, Ore.
 – The defense was on display for Lewis & Clark College women's soccer on Saturday afternoon as they allowed Pacific University only one shot on goal in a 0-0 Northwest Conference game at Griswold Stadium.

THE BASICS

Lewis & Clark 0, Pacific 0
(Lewis & Clark 4-7-2, NWC 3-4-2)
(Pacific 2-9-1, NWC 1-7-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Lewis & Clark had three corner kicks, and senior midfielder Celeste Schreifels kicked her first of two shots in the game before Pacific attempted their first and only shot in the opening 45 minutes. In the 23rd minute, Boxers' keeper, Elle Hamilton, dove to her right to stop a Schreifels' header and the first shot of goal after Pioneers sophomore Carson Warfield found the senior in the middle of the box on a free kick. Freshman Grace Smith found the ball at 41:07 and took a great hooking shot from the edge of the box but pushed it wide and high.

Pacific started strong in the second half but could not convert their two-on-one in the 53rd minute. The Boxers' Chanyn Santos cut a pass to a wide-open Brooklyn Yano on the back post, who then kicked the ball off the post and out for a Pioneers goal kick.

Smith fed sophomore Kate Meinhard at 58:50 in the middle of the box, and the center-back's right foot touch hit off the crossbar and out for her first of five shots in the second half, providing an offensive boost for the Pioneers in the second half.

Pioneers' keeper Sophia Young recorded her lone save in the 74th minute as the Boxers' Mirella Garcia booted a kick from range to the middle of the net and into the senior's hands.

Senior Giselle Bodeen received a pass from Smith at the top of the box in the 83rd minute, spun around, and kicked a rocket on her third touch that ricocheted off the top of Hamilton's glove in the Pioneers' final chance to grab the win.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Meinhard recorded career-highs with her five shots and two shots on goal.
  • Schreifels recorded her 100th career shot at 22:39 in the game.
  • Lewis & Clark held Pacific to the lowest number of shots (3) by an opponent since they allowed two shots against Linfield on October 17, 2021. The single shot on goal and corner kick by the Boxers are also season-lows allowed for the Pioneers.
  • Seven Pioneers recorded 13 shots, with four Pioneers accounting for five shots on goal.
  • Young recorded her 16th career shutout and is one away from tying the program record.

WHO'S NEXT

Lewis & Clark will play their remaining October games away from Griswold for their longest stretch of road games this season starting tomorrow at Willamette in Salem at noon.
