Whitman Defeats Men's Soccer In Walla Walla

Declan Cloutier made six saves against the Blues

WALLA WALLA, Wash.—Whitman College scored a goal just before halftime to open up a 2-0 lead and added two goals in quick succession to open the second half to defeat Lewis & Clark College men's soccer on Sunday afternoon at the Whitman Athletic Fields. 
 
THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Whitman moved into a tie for third place in the Northwest Conference Standings thanks to goals from six different players. Zachary Stonier scored twice to lead the Blues to their second-straight blowout victory. 
 
Pioneers sophomore goalie Declan Cloutier earned the start. Cloutier made six saves on 10 shots over the opening 69:37. Freshman Micaiah Garan came on to close out the game and posted two saves over the final 20:23. 
 
Freshman Nadav Dicovski led the Lewis & Clark attack with three shots. 
 
Whitman took a lead just before the 10-minute mark, when Christian Gomez scored at 9:49. 
 
The game would stay at 1-0 until the final 30 seconds of the first half. Lewis & Clark conceded a foul in the box and Jossue Tobar converted to make it 2-0 at 44:34. 
 
The Blues put the game away early in the second half. Riki Kobayashi (51:17) and Fernando Lopez-Vega (52:40) each scored in a 1:23 span early in the second stanza to make it 4-0. 
 
Whitman tacked on three goals in a 10-minute span late in the game with Stonier scoring two of the three tallies. 
 
Lewis & Clark's offense came alive in the final 45 minutes. The Pioneers recorded all four of their shots in the second half. 
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Whitman outshot the Pioneers 30-4 and earned a 16-1 edge on shots on goal. 
  • The Pioneers recorded a defensive team save for the second-consecutive day. 
  • Dicovski and fellow freshman Dylan Weinstein (one shot on goal) combined for the Pioneers four shots. 
  • Cloutier leads the team with his 61.8 save percentage and 3.94 goals against average and sits second behind Ben Tallent with his 21 saves. 
  • Dicvoski leads the Pioneers with 16 total shots and six shots on target. 
WHO'S NEXT 
 
Lewis & Clark will return home to host Pacific University on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The game will mark the beginning of the Pioneers second time through the conference slate and Lewis & Clark's final home game in the month of October.
