Women’s Soccer Held at Bay by Pirates in 2-0 NWC Loss

Megan Yanagi led Pioneers with a shot in each half.

SPOKANE, Wash. –Lewis & Clark College women's soccer fell to Whitworth University 2-0 Saturday afternoon after surrendering a goal in each half of the Northwest Conference contest.

THE BASICS

Whitworth 2, Lewis & Clark 0
(Lewis & Clark 4-6-1, NWC 3-3-1)
(Whitworth 3-5-3, NWC 3-4-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Whitworth scored a point-blank goal in the sixth minute of the game to take the early 1-0 lead, then continued to attack the Lewis & Clark net as senior keeper Sophia Young staved off two more Pirate scoring attempts before the Pioneers were able to get a shot off.

Freshman Grace Smith ripped the ball from range in the 31st minute to try and tie the game, but Pirate keeper Kate Nelson easily scooped up the save.

Sophomore Megan Yanagi took a header at midfield, rotated to her left, and turned on the jets. Her four-touch foot race beat the Pirate defender and the rocket from Yanagi's right foot at the 43:50 mark from the top right of the box was the best shot the Pioneers had at scoring the equalizer in the first half.

Four minutes into the second half, Sophomore Elle Sparks found Yanagi on the left side of the box but a Pirate defender stepped in front of the shot to deny the Pioneers' lone attempt at a score in the second half.

Whitworth fired off four shots on target the rest of the game with Young saving all of them but the first one in the 58th minute that put the Pirates up 2-0.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Young finished with a season-high six saves in the game.
