PORTLAND, Ore.—Sophomore center back
Kate Meinhard scored her first collegiate goal with just over 15 minutes to play to help Lewis & Clark College women's soccer defeat Willamette University 2-1 on Tuesday night at Griswold Stadium.Â
Â
THE BASICS
Lewis & Clark 2, Willamette 1
(Lewis & Clark 3-5-1, Northwest Conference 3-2-1)Â
(Willamette 0-8-2, NWC 0-5-1)Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Â
After giving up a game-tying goal in the 66
th minute on a free kick, Meinhard booted in the rebound off a
Carson Warfield free kick to help the Pioneers regain the lead and snap a two-game losing streak. With the victory, the Pioneers moved back above .500 in conference play and ended their season-high, five-game home stand with a .500 record (2-2-1).Â
Â
Lewis & Clark took a 1-0 lead just past the midway point of the first half on
Celeste Schreifels' team-leading third goal of the season.
Â
The game would stay that way for over 40 minutes, as Lewis & Clark struggled to gain any breathing room against a Willamette team that is still looking for their first win of the season.
Â
Meinhard's goal was her first collegiate tally and just her third shot on goal of the season. Schreifels added her third goal of the year and third career penalty kick in as many tries. Warfield picked up her first collegiate assist on the Meinhard goal.Â
Â
Senior goalie
Sophia Young made four saves on five shots to earn her 16
th collegiate victory.Â
Â
After a slow start for both teams, Lewis & Clark took a 1-0 lead in the 26
th minute. Senior
Sasha Raimondo was clipped in the box and went down to draw the penalty kick. Schreifels calmly stepped up and placed her shot inside the far post for a 1-0 advantage.Â
Â
The Pioneers would record three more shots before the break but never really challenged Willamette keeper Siera Edwards.Â
Â
Willamette tied the game at 65:47. The Pioneers were whistled for a foul just outside the box and Samantha Lute stepped up to take the free kick from dead center. After another player ran over the ball, Lute curled a shot over the wall and into the top-right corner to tie the game.Â
Â
Warfield would limp off shortly after and would only come back into the game after
Megan Yanagi was brought down in a similar position to the Bearcats free kick. With the ball lined up centrally and 27-yards out, Warfield sent a line drive shot that the keeper parried off the bar. The ball bounced up and Meinhard was the first player to react as she raced past her defender and hit a right-footed volley just before the keeper could get to the ball.Â
Â
Willamette had one excellent chance to tie the game. Nina Cybulski-Krassner snuck in behind the Pioneers defense and was one-on-one with Young inside the box, but Young dove across her net and caught the shot and held on to deny the Bearcats an equalizer in the 84th minute.Â
Â
BY THE NUMBERS
- Lewis & Clark outshot Willamette 16-5 and held a 9-5 edge in shots on goal. The two teams each finished with three corner kicks apiece.Â
- Meinhard is the sixth Pioneer to score their first collegiate goal this season.Â
- With the win, Lewis & Clark is now unbeaten in three-straight against the Bearcats (2-0-1). It's their longest unbeaten streak against Willamette since the program restarted in 2004.Â
- The Pioneers moved back into the top-four in the NWC with the victory. Lewis & Clark's 10 points (3-2-1) are just three behind third-place Whitman College (4-1-1) who the Pioneers will play on Sunday at Noon.Â
WHAT'S NEXT
Â
Lewis & Clark will travel to Washington this weekend to take on Whitworth University (Saturday at Noon) and Whitman (Sunday at Noon). Last season, the Pioneers went 3-0-1 against the "Whits," including a road sweep of the two schools to open up conference play.Â
