Men’s Soccer Snaps 23-Game Losing Streak With Tie

Freshman Micaiah Garan recorded six saves for first collegiate shutout.

NEWBERG, Ore. –The Lewis & Clark College men's soccer team earned their first point in Northwest Conference play and ended a 23-game losing streak dating back to last season with a 0-0 draw at George Fox University on Wednesday night.

THE BASICS

Lewis & Clark 0, George Fox 0
(Lewis & Clark 0-16-1, NWC 0-12-1)
(George Fox 5-10-2, NWC 4-7-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Five freshmen, Emmett Olson, Clay Scarth, Simon McGlothern, Ben Schwartz, and keeper Micaiah Garan, started in the backfield for the Pioneers and the defense held the George Fox Bruins scoreless over 90 minutes to earn the program's first shutout in almost exactly 33 years.

Garan earned his fourth start in net and recorded six saves to earn his fourth collegiate shutout. The last time a men's soccer team at Lewis & Clark shut out an opponent was a 1-0 win over Concordia University (Portland) on October 31, 1990, the last game of that season.

George Fox fired eight shots in the first 45 minutes of the game. Garan hauled in four of those for saves; two of them sailed right of the goal, one to the left, and the last was a shot by the Bruins Connor Kong booted from the top of the box into a swarm of Pioneers and blocked for a corner kick.

Sophomore Daniel Estoll launched a ball from distance and kicked wide of the far post in the 33rd minute for the Pioneers' first shot of the night.

The Bruins Killnahe Waring challenged Garan from the middle of the box in the 55th and 56th minutes, and both times, the freshman keeper was able to save the shot.

Freshman Nadav Dicovski made a mad dash in the final seconds of the game and gave the Pioneers one last chance to put a point on the board, but his shot from the left side at 89:44 was stopped at the near post by the Bruins Keeper Keoni Gavino.

"I thought we played our worst game of the season in the first half against Linfield on Saturday," head coach Jim Tursi said. "We didn't show heart and didn't work hard. So, to turn it around and play our best game of the season against Puget Sound on Sunday and then keep it going into today and to get a tie today is huge for us. These guys have been working really hard, and it's great for them to see that hard work pay off. It means a lot for all of us to get that first result as a program."

This was the first result for the men's program since November 1, 1991, a 3-3 draw against Western Baptist, now Corban University, in the team's second to last game of that season. The Pioneers finished 0-15-1 in 1991.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Garan has moved into second on the team with 29 saves this season, in seven appearances.
  • The Pioneers allowed a season low 13 shots and six shots on goal.
  • Dicovski has recorded a shot on goal in the last three games and seven total games this season, he leads the team with 11 shots on target.
WHO'S NEXT

Lewis & Clark heads to Tacoma on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. for a meeting with NWC leading Pacific Lutheran in their final road contest of the season.
