Dicovski Gives Men's Soccer Early Lead In Tacoma

Men's soccer took their first lead in a countable game since the program restarted

TACOMA, Wash.—Freshman Nadav Dicovski scored early but the University of Puget Sound responded with three goals in a 20-minute span to earn a 3-1 win over Lewis & Clark College men's soccer on Sunday afternoon at East Field.

THE BASICS
Puget Sound 3, Lewis & Clark 1
(Lewis & Clark College 0-16, Northwest Conference 0-12)
(Puget Sound 7-3-4, NWC 5-3-4)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Dicovski scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season to give the Pioneers their first lead in a countable game since the program restarted last fall.

The Pioneers freshman scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season at 7:56 to give Lewis & Clark an early 1-0 advantage.

The goal came off a free kick opportunity from right next to the corner flag. Junior Wesley Esparza Salazar sent the ball to the top of the six-yard box where sophomore Ben Schwartz knocked it down off a Loggers defender. With the ball bouncing back towards the top of the box, sophomore Aashir Walson won a foot race and perfectly chipped a pass for Dicovski at the back post. Dicovski's first touch pushed the ball back across the goalmouth and Schwartz beat his defender to get a foot on it only for the goalie to parry Schwartz's shot straight up. The ball bounced off the top of the crossbar and fell straight down and Dicovski backheeled the ball past the goalie from just off the goal line.

Sophomore Ben Tallent made seven saves on 10 shots to help Lewis & Clark keep an opponent to three goals or fewer for only the third time this season (second in NWC play). Tallent made all seven of his saves in the second half to give the Pioneers a chance of a comeback.

Puget Sound took control of the game over a 17:50 span in the first half.

Liam Elliott tied the game at 16:52 and the hosts took the lead under 15 minutes later, when Etienne Polak made it 2-1 at 30:26. Puget Sound finished off the scoring in the contest at 34:42 on a Graham Hall goal.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Dicovski has scored four of the Pioneers five goals in conference play. He is tied for 10th in the NWC with his four conference goals.
  • Tallent's seven saves were his second-most of the season. He made eight saves earlier this year in the home match against Puget Sound.
  • Puget Sound outshot the Pioneers 23-6 and held a 10-4 advantage on shots on target.
  • Dicovski led the Pioneers with three shots and three shots on goal. Sophomore Daniel Estoll and freshmen Owen Carroll and Dylan Weinstein all added a single shot.
