Women's Tennis Wins Three Consolation Titles At ITAs

Susanna Anand, Charlotte Makoni and Soraya Young-Pen all earned Titles

| Box Score 3 NEWBERG, Ore.—Susanna Anand, Charlotte Makoni and Soraya Young-Pen all won Consolation Bracket Titles and several Pioneers made it to the semifinals of the main draws as part of an excellent showing by Lewis & Clark College women's tennis at the 2023 ITA Northwest Women's Tournament. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Anand (A Singles Consolation First Round), Young-Pen (B Singles Consolation First Round) and Makoni (B Singles Consolation Second Round) all won titles to lead the Pioneers over the weekend. 
 
A Singles 
 
Anand and senior Seraphina Vossen represented the Pioneers against some of the top players in the entire Northwest Conference. 
 
Anand came into the draw as one of the four #5-8 seeds but was upset in the first round by Whitman College's Julia Longpre 3-6, 7-5, 10-7.
 
She would bounce back in a huge way. The reigning NWC Rookie of the Year won four-straight matches in the A Consolation First Round Bracket to take home a title. In the opening round, she nearly blanked Linfield University's Alexis Garner with a 6-0, 6-1 win. She added back-to-back 6-3, 6-2 decisions over Anika Groener (Willamette University) and Jules Thompson (Whitman) to earn a spot in the finals. In her matchup against Alexis de Crinis (Willamette), Anand breezed to a 6-2, 6-2 win and the title. 
 
Vossen opened singles play with a first-round victory. She knocked off Linfield's Kaitlynn Canubida 6-3, 5-7, 10-8. Vossen suffered a tough setback in the second round, as she went the distance with #5-8 Kalli Wiker of George Fox University. Wiker barely prevailed over Vossen 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (8-6). In the A Consolation Second Round draw, Vossen faced off against Whitman's Ilina Jha who was seeded #4. Jha came away with a 7-5, 6-0 victory. 
 
B Singles 
 
Lewis & Clark had five players competed in the B Draw and and all five players won at least two rounds. 
 
Young-Pen won the second of the Pioneers three titles on the weekend. After falling in a third-set tiebreaker in the opening round, Young-Pen won three-straight matches to win the B Consolation First Round Bracket. She knocked off Marie Tarrab (Willamette) 8-2 and then defeated Alicia Sola of Willamette 8-1. In the finals, the Pioneers junior earned a straight-set 6-2, 6-2 win over Sarah Kacmarek of the University of Puget Sound. 
 
Makoni added a title of her own. The freshman was seeded #9-12 coming into the draw. After advancing to the second round on a bye, she fell 6-0, 6-4 to Abigal Bond (George Fox). That would be her last loss of the weekend in singles. Makoni would bounce back to win four-straight singles matches. She dispatched Krishna Agriwal (Puget Sound) 6-4, 7-5 and Piper Rylander 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the semis. Makoni tacked on a 7-5, 6-3 win over Natalie Budge of Whitworth University to make the finals. In her tightest match of the weekend, Makoni came back from one set down to defeat Morgan McArthur (Whitworth) 1-6, 7-5, 10-8 and take the B Consolation Second Round Title. 
 
Junior Hayley Kreps made the deepest singles run in a main draw of any Pioneer. She was seeded #5-8 and earned an automatic bye to the Second Round. Kreps nearly blanked Ruby Thompson (Willamette) 6-0, 6-1 to make the quarters and then earned a win by default over Emily Redwood (Linfield) to advance to the semifinals. In the semis, Pacific University's Valentina Casab-Klescova defeated Kreps by a 6-2, 6-1 scoreline. 
 
Freshman Emma Loucks and sophomore Yenny Cohen also competed in the B Singles Draw. 
 
Loucks earned a pair of victories to advance to the quarterfinals. She opened her first ITA Tournament with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Morgan Wagoner (Pacific). In the second round, she upset #5-8 Natalie Budge (Whitworth) 6-3, 6-1. Her run finally came to an end in the quarterfinals. Facing her second-straight seeded player, Loucks fell 6-1, 6-1 to #9-12 Shanah Denham (George Fox). 
 
Cohen added a win of her own. The sophomore defeated Chloe Ivy-Curwen (Puget Sound) 6-3, 6-2. In the second round, Kaylah Tan of Whitman barely beat Cohen 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 13-11. 
 
DOUBLES 
 
Anand and Vossen advanced to the semifinals of the doubles bracket to lead Lewis & Clark. 
 
The Pioneers top doubles pair were seeded #5-8 heading into the weekend. They crushed Sam Baltz and Lisa Ponti (Linfield) 8-2 in the opening round. Anand and Vossen tacked on an 8-6 win over George Fox's Ari Rader and Cassey Hitch to advance to the quarters. In the quarterfinals, the Pioneers duo pulled off a huge victory. The pair defeated third-seeded Ilina Jha and Sascha Wells (Whitman) 8-7 (10-2) to make the semifinals. They finally were knocked off by eventual champions Cassidy Binder/Sydnie Binder (Pacific) 8-1 to finish off their weekend. 
 
Loucks and Cohen also earned a win in the doubles draw. They picked up an 8-3 victory over Clara Todd and Olivia Corbett (Whitworth). In the second round, the Denham sisters (Sophia and Shanah) of George Fox downed the Pioneers duo 8-5. 
 
Kreps and Makoni were the final Pioneers doubles pair. They fell 8-5 in the opening round to #5-8 Gracie Smyley and Paige Oliver of Whitworth. 
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • All seven Pioneers won multiple matches on the weekend and four of the seven earned wins in both singles and doubles. 
  • Anand finished the weekend 7-2 and is tied for the team lead in singles (five with Makoni) and doubles (three with Vossen). 
  • Lewis & Clark won a B Consolation Draw Title for the second-straight year. Last seasons, Kreps won the B Singles Consolation Title. 
WHAT'S NEXT 
 
This weekend's tournament marked the final competition of the fall semester for Lewis & Clark. They will resume competition early in the spring semester when they begin playing dual matches.
