Cloutier Posts Five Saves In Setback At Willamette

Declan Cloutier sits second on the team with 26 saves

SALEM, Ore.—Despite five saves from sophomore goalie Declan Cloutier, Lewis & Clark College men's soccer fell 4-0 to host Willamette University on Sunday afternoon at Sparks Field.

THE BASICS
Willamette 4, Lewis & Clark 0
(Lewis & Clark 0-14, Northwest Conference 0-10)
(Willamette 6-7-1, NWC 6-3-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Less than two weeks after the Pioneers put a scare in the defending NWC Champions in Portland, Willamette scored four goals in a 30-minute span to cruise to a 4-0 home win.

Cloutier posted five or more saves in a conference contest for the third time in as many NWC starts. He kept the hosts off the board for nearly 40 minutes and ended the game with five saves on nine shots.

Sophomore Daniel Estoll posted Lewis & Clark's lone shot of the contest.

After being held off the scoreboard for the majority of the first half, Willamette struck for two goals in a 3:58 span late in the half. Luka Varav scored from the top of the box in the 39th minute and Ryan O'Grady made it 2-0 at 42:39.

Jett Starr tacked on a goal just over 10 minutes later to make it 3-0 at 53:20.

For the second-straight day, Lewis & Clark saw their opponent go down a man due to a straight-red. Willamette's Thiago Palhetas was whistled for a red card for an action away from the play in the 59th minute.

The Pioneers struck for their lone shot of the game in the 72nd minute, when Estoll sent a shot just wide of the net.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Willamette finished the game with a 25-1 edge in shots and 9-0 lead in shots on goal.
