HOW IT HAPPENED
Ā
After over 70 minutes of scoreless play, both teams scored on free kicks within eight minutes of each other in a tight 1-1 tie.Ā
Ā
Willamette took the lead in the 73
rdĀ minute. The Bearcats sent a cross into the box that bounced up and hit a Pioneers defender. The referee allowed the play to continue but after Lewis & Clark cleared the ball out of play, he pointed to the spot. Willamette senior Sophie Cleland stepped up and sent a low shot just underneath Pioneer goalie Sophie Young for a 1-0 lead.Ā
Ā
Lewis & Clark picked up the pressure from there and earned a well-deserved equalizer in the 80th minute. Senior
Abby Hayes sent a long ball into the Willamette defensive half and senior
Giselle Bodeen was upended by a Bearcats defender for a free kick 30-yards out along the near side of the field.Ā
Ā
The Pioneers turned to Warfield ā who has quickly become the team's go-to player on free kicks. She calmly stepped up and floated a ball towards the far side of the net that the Willamette keeper managed to get a hand on but couldn't keep it out of the net.Ā
Ā
Neither side managed to record a shot in the final 10 minutes, forcing the two teams to split the points.Ā
