Box Score PORTLAND, Ore.—Lewis & Clark College men's tennis kicked off their 2022-23 season with a mini tournament against NWC foes Linfield University and University Puget Sound on Sunday at the L&C Tennis Dome.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Five Pioneers went 2-0 in singles play and the Pioneers went a perfect 4-0 in doubles to earn a successful start to the season. All four Pioneers freshmen earned singles wins in their collegiate debuts.
Sunday's tournament was broken into four groups with each group being made up of seven singles players (eight in group one). The players played mini sets to four games.
In group one, senior
Kristian Peev, sophomore
Matt Chio and freshman
Kai Wills represented the Pioneers. Chio went a perfect 2-0, while Wills picked up his first collegiate victory.
In group two, senior
Alberto Dos Santos and freshman
Landon Cronin each finished 2-0. Dos Santos knocked off Linfield's Alexander Rosenquist 4-1, 4-1 and Puget Sound's Trent Beckman 4-1, 4-2. Cronin registered his first two collegiate wins by downing Puget Sound's Mike Smolskis 4-2, 4-0 and UPS' Conor Blakeney 4-2, 4-2.
Freshman
Wade McDermott and sophomore
Bennett Gazor represented the Pioneers in group three. McDermott picked up two wins in his first two collegiate matches. He defeated Puget Sound's Nicholas Pulido 4-1, 4-1 and UPS' Carson Ward 4-1, 4-1.
In the fourth and final group, junior
Logan Hausler and freshman
Spencer Loucks added three more wins for the Pioneers. Hausler swept a pair of Puget Sound players. He won his first match 4-2, 2-4, 10-7 over Will Church and tacked on a 4-1, 4-0 win over Dylan Lybeck. Loucks picked up his first collegiate victory with a 4-2, 4-3 (7-4) win over Linfield's Wyatt Zagyva.
WHAT'S NEXT
Lewis & Clark men's tennis will host the 2022 Fall ITA Men's Regional Tournament this week in Vancouver, Wash. Play is tentatively scheduled to start on Friday and run through Sunday. More information will be available early this week.
